If Marina could turn away enough of the army she might not have to worry about facing the dread wizard of these lands. He had been pushing his forces hard and though his power was great it was not infinite. There were those in his lands that were sure to seek to replace him and they would see his failure as weakness so she dropped the magical orb.
She was tempted to stick around and see the result of the chaos she had crafted but it was best if she was far from here. Dreze would be certain to see a powerful force against the culprit who had ruined the advance of his forces and she wanted to be elsewhere creating more trouble for them to the point that they would have too many fires to put out to worry about her. She hoped to finish things with Dreze soon but there were many ways to destroy someone and it was likely the direct assault wouldn’t be wise against someone so well defended.
Birwick saw the strange orb fall from the sky and land near him. It appeared to have come from some passing wizard on a carpet and he had seen that anything involving magic users was trouble. His raised hand drew his men to an instant halt. He was about to call over one of the mages to investigate when the magical object unleashed its fury upon the group.
A powerful blast of energy struck Commander Birwick who dropped to the ground. Pain filled his body as it swelled out of his armor. The straps couldn’t contain his freshly scaled skin as a new coat of armor took the place of the old one. His eyes opened to see other who had been under his command suffering their own changes. Some were sprouting fur while others started to ooze slime or growing new appendages. Men who had once called him comrade drew back in horror as they watched what was happening in front of them.
They drew weapons as magic users rushed to examine what was happening. A panicked soldier lets an arrow fly striking Birwick but it did no harm as it bounced off the steel like scales. Rage filled the newly formed wyvern at the attack. He swung his tail with deadly accuracy into the enemy from instinct his stinger sticking out the other side of the guard. Roaring in triumph he continued his assault with a quick clamping shut of his jaws on a shock mage.
A battle the army had not expected was soon raging across the grounds as monsters fought men bringing death and destruction to the army. They had been prepared to fight men, not the strange beasts that were tearing through their ranks. A drake spits acid into the group of spell crafters blinding them while a giant hairy monster ripped and tore through the ranks.
Birwick was savoring the flesh of a mighty war elephant when he came back to who he was. The great first legion of Dreze was in ruins. He had no idea how much time had passed since the change but the sun was much lower in the sky. His human shape showed no sign of returning, he was a giant winged beast who had just helped destroyed his own army. He would have felt more guilt it if he didn’t know they were on a path of destruction that Dreze had forced upon them. Perhaps it was time to go on the hunt for Dreze or a cure from the wizard who had caused this.
