Nyx blinked as she regarded the strange pegasus lying on the floor. His coat was a pale color, only a few shades off from Rarity's pure white. He wore a royal blue business vest and a red tie on his front. His mane was a spiky, slicked-back mess that reminded Nyx of a hedgehog in front of a blow dryer. But it was his Cutie Mark that drew her eye the most: an outline of a shout bubble from comics, with a bright red word inside: 'OBJECTION!'.
Where have I heard that before...? wondered the alicorn. Deciding she'd need answers directly from the pony himself, she leaned down and gently nudged him. He groaned as he began to wake up.

"Ow..." Phoenix Wright moaned as he slowly regained consciousness. "That's the last time I let Gumshoe talk me into drinking after a case." He was content for the moment to lie where he was, trying to let the hangover work itself out.
"Excuse me, are you okay?" asked a nearby voice. It was fairly young, and female.
"I feel like a herd of elephants used my head as a tap-dance stage," Phoenix replied, not happy about his persisting headache.
"Oh, you have a headache? Here, let me take care of that," the voice said. Before Phoenix could question her, he felt something hard and somewhat pointed touch his head. Moments later, a cool feeling of relief flowed through his head, banishing the throbbing headache.
"Ma'am, I don't know what you did, but you are a veritable angel," the attorney said in bliss, finally deciding to open his eyes to look upon the heavenly savior that had defeated the foul menace known as a hangover.
"You're quite welcome," the pitch-black pony with cat-like eyes replied.
Phoenix blinked. Then blinked again. Then he sighed. "Oh, boy, back here again... So, who is it this time?"
The pony blinked. "Uh, pardon?"
Phoenix rolled his eyes. "Look, the only reason I'd be back in Equestria is if somepony wanted me to represent them in a case. So who is it?"
"Back in...?" The pony seemed confused for a moment, then her eyes widened. "Wait a minute... I know you! You're Phoenix Wright!!"
The attorney smiled. "The one and only! Best attorney in the universe!"
"But... wait. I thought Phoenix Wright was a human," continued the pony, now looking confused.
"Uh, yeah, I - " Phoenix attempted to stand up to face the pony, but fell over as his sense of balance seemed off. Puzzled, Phoenix looked himself over... and screamed. "WHAT HAPPENED TO ME?!"
The black pony's ears flattened against her head as she was assaulted by the sound. "I'm guessing some sort of magic turned you into a pony, Mr. Wright. Maybe my mom could help you out though?"
"Oh yeah?!" the former human snapped, rattled beyond belief. "And who's your mom that knows so much about magic?!"
Her catlike eyes narrowed. "I believe you know her. Her name's Twilight Sparkle."
That name cut through Phoenix's growing panic like a knife. "Twilight...?" he repeated. Almost immediately, a feeling of relief went through him. "Oh, if it's Twilight, then sure, let's go see her. Goodness knows, I'd like to see how she's been since the last time I was here."
She smiled, her horn glowing as she lifted him up and set him on his hooves. "I'm sure she'd love to catch up with you, too, Mr. Wright."
Phoenix smiled back. Then he blinked as something occured to him. "Waitaminute. Twilight was single, and childless the last time I saw her. How did you - ?"
"Adopted," interrupted the pony.
Phoenix blinked again at the one-word explanation. "Ah. That explains it." He then looked her over, cocking his head. "You're awfully tall, Ms... er..."
She giggled. "My name is Nyx. Nyx Sparkle."
Phoenix blinked, then chuckled. "Sorry," he said, when she looked at him quizzically. "It's just, the last time I was here, a pony nicknamed me 'Nix', short for 'Phoenix'. Said something about it being 'cooler'."
Nyx chuckled as well. "Ah, that'd be Rainbow Dash. She's been doing quite well since you saved her from being banished to the moon or sun."
"I should hope so!" the attorney said, raising a forehoof for emphasis. However, he was unused to being a pony, and fell over again. "Um, Ms. Nyx, could you perhaps help me to the Ponyville Library?"
Nyx giggled again. "Certainly."
*****
Nyx was nearly beside herself with giddiness as she led Phoenix Wright to Ponyville. I can't believe it! Mom told me about him a lot, and now I'm meeting him myself! Thoough the fact that he's a pony and not a human is a bit odd, but I'm not going to dwell on that! He's a hero of mine, and I'm TALKING TO HIM!
In truth, there hadn't been much talking for the past few minutes. After Phoenix had gotten the hang of walking like a pony, there had been a companionable silence between the two. Nyx didn't mind; she was so gleeful at meeting one of her mom's old friends (and one of her own personal heroes) that she couldn't think of anything to say.
The silence was broken by Phoenix. "Ahem. As I was saying before, Ms. Nyx, you're quite tall. Taller than most ponies I met last time. And... you have both wings and a horn. From what I read before, such traits are usually only exhibited by royalty."
His words doused the flames of giddiness within Nyx, and her mood dropped sharply. "Well... there's a reason for that, Mr. Wright. It's complicated, though..."
"Hey, hey, it's alright. You don't have to tell me if you don't want to," the neo-pony said, looking apologetic.
Nyx smiled gratefully at him. "I'll tell you at some point during your stay here. You'll probably learn anyway, one way or another." She looked up. "Oh! We're here!"
She opened the door to the Books and Branches Library, and spotted Twilight on the main floor. The unicorn briefly glanced up at Nyx, before returning to the book in front of her. "What's up, Nyx? I thought you'd be busy at the castle all day."
"Well, I was going to be, but I found something I had to show you," the alicorn replied.
Twilight rolled her eyes a bit. "Nyx, I told you, be careful with the stuff in there. I don't want you bringing home any cursed relics, dark magics, or murals of eternal night."
"And what about old friends?" Phoenix asked, smothering a chuckle.
Twilight's head snapped up, focusing on the pegasus standing next to her daughter. "Phoenix...?" she gaped in disbelief.
"Long time, no see, Twilight," Phoenix said with a smile.
Twilight fairly sprang across the room, and hugged the attorney, a hug which was eagerly returned. "Phoenix! Omigosh, it's really you! But what are you doing back in Equestria? And why are you a pony?!"
Nyx smiled at the sight, but coughed a little. "Well, that's why we're here. Phoenix doesn't know the answer to either of those questions, and neither do I. We were hoping you could find out."
Twilight smiled brightly. "Of course!" She began floating a few books off the shelves. "Though, I hope you don't mind if we play catch-up while we work on this, Phoenix?"
"Not at all! I'd love to hear what's happened since I left!" Phoenix replied, equally brightly. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
