This choice: Charlotte Young, a pretty young newlywed -and 5 months pregnant. • Go Back...Chapter #4Charlotte Young, a pretty young newlywed -and 5... by: fantaghiro You looked at the sleeping 27 year old, trying unsuccessfully to find some evidence of your wife. Sarah, while still attractive, had been shorter and a little heavier than Charlotte - though Charlotte's smaller frame had larger breasts and a better shape. And her heart-shaped face framed by a blonde bob looked nothing like Sarah's long, brown hair.
You heard a sound behind you and turned to see Robert, Charlotte's husband enter the room wearing a worried look. You nodded to him silently and he sat down beside you. You could barely imagine his pain, seeing what looked like his wife lying here and knowing that it was in fact someone else. He seemed to be dealing with this by focusing on his unborn child - that had been his deciding factor in agreeing to the transplant in the first place.
"It's okay, Rob. The doctor said the baby will be fine, and that Sarah should wake up any time now," you assured him. He glanced up at you and gave a weak smile. "Thanks, James. And I'm glad that Sarah is doing so well. I know this isn't easy for you either."
You both let the conversation lapse and continued to wait.
A little later Sarah began to stir. "Jim?" she muttered weakly.
"I'm here, honey," you told her, taking her hand. Robert ran to the door and called out "Doctor, she's awake!" He stepped out, saying "I'll give you some privacy."
Doctor Saunders arrived just as Sarah opened her eyes to see you. "Wuh...what happened?" she asked. "We were in the car and..." she jerked suddenly. "Something hit us! It hurt so much - and then I can't remember anything else."
"Shh, it's fine now, darling. You were hurt very badly and the doctors saved your life." You hesitated and she looked at you questioningly. "But?" she prodded. She glanced at the doctor. "What's wrong with me? Am I paralyzed? Maimed?"
"No, nothing like that," you assured her. "You're perfectly healthy. It's just that...the doctors had to do a new transplant to save you." You looked at the doctor helplessly, not sure how to explain.
Doctor Saunders could be incredibly technical but still had an excellent bedside manner. As he explained what had been done to Sarah, her eyes widened in disbelief. You nodded, adding "I know it sounds like scifi but it's true." Eventually the news sinks in.
Sarah asked for a mirror so the doctor handed her one. She stared at her reflection for several minutes, touching her face with her hands and making various expressions. "It's incredible!" she finally said, looking at you with a smile.
At your curious expression, she continued "Maybe I should be more upset, but I'm just glad to be alive." She looked at her reflection again. "And instead of scarred or maimed, I'm young again and so pretty." She ran her hands down her new body, then paused at her stomach. She got a strange expression and lifted her shirt to see the slight protrusion.
"Am I pregnant?" she asked, looking back up at you and the doctor.
"Yes," Doctor Saunders responded. "You are five months pregnant with a little girl. I admit part of the justification in performing this transplant was to save the life of the child."
Sarah looked shocked. "I...I don't know what to say. It's like some kind of crazy dream. I wake up to find I'm a different person, young and pretty - and having a baby!"
