He had hurried through everything they gave him, finding it hard to focus on the verbiage. It struck him for a moment that those mental changes bothered him now far more than the physical. The first few days he struggled to adapt to his new body - that of 19 year old Ariel Zolcak. But he adapted disturbingly fast - after two weeks the body felt almost completely normal to him.
The doctors claimed that was to be expected. In addition to the physical aspects of Ariel he inherited, he apparently kept most of her brain! The doctors transplanted only a small part of his own to her body, so they theorized that he would quickly gain more and more of her physical manerisms and habits. That was bad enough, he told himself, but his mental characteristics were clearly being affected as well. His old self would have poured over all the forms and agreements line by line, meticulously and thoroughly. Now the legalese quickly bored him and he found himself just scanning through the pages.
Sarah seemed better off in that regards. Her changes weren't as drastic. She was now only a slightly older woman, the wealthy divorcee Kimberly Zolcak. He had been so focused on his own changes that he hadn't really noticed much of a difference in her - aside from her much more attractive (and surgically enhanced) looks. That also gave him mixed reactions.
There were tears from both of them at first. Once she got through the initial shock of their new bodies, Sarah had begun to take charge, showing a relentless optimism and determination in the face of these strange circumstances. James had always been the one to lead the decision making before, but now he just felt more comfortable following Sarah - she seemed more authoritative and decisive. And physically, it was strange. They had hugged and even kissed a bit since awakening from the surgeries, but James was unable to sort through his feelings. On the one hand, his love for Sarah was undiminished. She was the most important person in his life, his partner, and he still felt that strong bond. More superficially, she was even more beautiful now, with what he would have called a "killer body". But on the other hand, her new body didn't provoke consistent reactions from him. Sometimes when watching her get undressed for physical therapy, his nipples would stiffen, his pulse increase, and he would even get a little wet. Other times, though, he felt nothing - except some admiration and perhaps even jealousy for her body!
Regardless of his feelings, their lives would change in every way. Due to the experimental nature of the sugery, they agreed to assume the lives of Ariel & Kimberly, keeping the transplants a secret. From husband & wife, they were now daughter & mother. He had a successful career in IT - now he was a rich college girl who lived with her mom. And Sarah was 'her' mother, and managed all the finances the family! Sarah had stepped up there as well, throwing herself into learning everything about her new life as Kimberly before they were discharged from the hospital.
James thought it would be hard for him with that as well, but he was wrong. He quickly became immersed in Ariel's social media and emails, gleaning far more about her life than he would have thought possible in two short weeks. He even had flashes of knowledge, bits of info from Ariel's life that weren't in what he read, and occasional mental images of events from her past. At first that completely freaked him out, but multiple sessions with a special therapist the hospital provided eventually helped him accept that as a benefit - a blessing to him under the circumstances, to help him adapt to his new life.
"Sarah!" he called out, standing to meet her as she stepped out of the office where she'd been with the lawyers. She gave him a look. "Ariel..." she emphasized in a low voice.
James gave a small grimace - though if he could have seen himself, he would have called it 'cute' on his new face. "Ugh, sorry... Mom," he said in a very teen-like tone of frustration. She nodded in approval.
"Come on, dear. Smile. We're finally getting out of here," she told him.
James sighed but obeyed. His smile quickly became genuine at the thought of leaving the hospital. Sarah put her arm around him and smiled as well. "Let's go try out our new lives," she said.
