Chapter #5

Shy and Geeky

    by: Katastrophe Author IconMail Icon
Sam was once a proper lad's lad. He was good at sports, incredibly rowdy and spent most of his days with "the boys". How fitting, then, for some kind of force out there to decide to turn him into the total opposite.

It all started after rugby practice one night. Sam, age 16, had felt more tired than usual. He made his way home, drank a protein shake, then decided to call it early. He woke up around 8am the next day, with school due to start at 9. Realising he only had an hour until school, he cursed under his breath and began rushing to shower and throw clothes on. He was struggling a lot with his vision this morning, but he chose to chalk that up to his continued tiredness. At least there wasn't any practice tonight, he'd catch up with sleep then and it'd all work itself out.

His mother had attempted to say good morning to him, but due to his rush and general dismissiveness he only wound up grunting at her and running to the door. Making it to school just about in time, he greeted his best mate Joe with a loud cheer and a high five/handshake type thing which hurt Sam more than usual. He thought that weird but like with his vision he figured it was probably just exhaustion.

"So what happened to you last night, bro? You weren't on Fifa." Joe asked him, breaking Sam's train of thought.

"I was bloody knackered, lad. Figured I'd just crash after practice. You seen Georgia?" Georgia was his girlfriend and a cheerleader.

"I think she went to her locker with her posse. I don't know why you date that slag to be honest, man."

"I'll give you two reasons." He said making a cupping motion a decent distance from his chest. Joe laughed at this.

"Go get her, bro."

Sam headed towards Georgia's locker, seeing her and approaching from behind. He then grabbed her waist and kissed her neck. She spun round in his arms, leaning in for a deep kiss.

"Sup, babe." Sam said once their lips broke apart.

"Just teaching the latest geek her place in this school. Toni Reed thought she could ask out Ewan Jones. That geek. I know she has a decent rack and a nice ass, but she's still into some very weird stuff. Can't have her going near basketball players, can we?" Sam was not listening, whatsoever. So he just grunted. Georgia wasn't exactly the nicest girl in the world, to put it lightly.

Eventually, class started and they had to go their separate ways. They made plans to hang over the weekend. On his way to class, Sam's vision kept blurring. He must be REALLY tired. It was math now, and he met up with Joe and another lad on the rugby team called Louie outside their classroom. But this class was weird. Despite the fact he knew he hadn't done his homework, it was there totally completed with his name on in his handwriting. Whoever had done that was a legend. But it was a bit weird that he didn't know that someone had. The other thing is that he found himself participating in class. Almost automatically. He knew the answers to all of the questions their teacher was asking. What's more, he was actually interested. Joe and Louie spent most of the glass gawping at him.

"What happened there, man? You were actually good at that class..." Joe asked as they were leaving.

"No idea, lad. It's as if someone just put knowledge in my brain. That homework I handed in was just there too."

"You sure you weren't studying instead of sleeping last night, lad?" Louie laughed.

"Whatever it is, least one of us has some kind of brain!" Joe added, laughing.

The rest of the day continued like this. Every class, it was like Sam had developed a proper brain and an interest in learning. By the time he got home, he just felt like collapsing. Rather than his usual protein shakes, he decided to have some pasta before sleeping.

As Sam slept that night, more changes would come to him. And his life was about to change forever.
