Chapter #4

Early birds get worms, tardy dragons get...

“Yeah, well, I have a bigger dick than you anyway, loser!” For a hermaphrodite, life and love could be tough, sometimes, particularly for the oftentimes intimidating figure of Jennifer. Six foot and six inches of slightly curvy, averagely built hyena, with short brown hair perfectly styled to look just the right kind of messy and tight clothes to accentuate both body and bulges. The hyena wasn’t quite as blessed as some of the more notable – or notorious – herms in the public gaze – neither stacked like a warehouse nor packing like a Chechnyan warlord. Hell, she’d take just one of those, at least then she wouldn’t be stuck in the nightmare no-man’s-land that she currently found herself in – as evidenced by the scampering footsteps of the fleeing bunny making good speed in the opposite direction. Finding love, of course, wasn’t the only reason the hyena found herself studying at AU – she had herself a scholarship for running track, and a keen interest in all things historical for when she inevitably broke both her legs, or got shot in the gut, or something utterly depressing and so very typical of her life like that. Jennifer sighed, ran a hand through that perfectly scuffed hair, and slowly wandered back in the direction of the diner on campus. Grrl needed her comfort food.

Coming the other direction, however, was a little purple dragon in a big hurry. Five foot zero of scurrying sneakers pounding the paved ground, his clothes flapping in the breeze, his books clutched tightly in his arms, Tyler scuttled along to the other side of campus, spitting curses under his breath. How was he supposed to know that Metaphysical and Ancient studies was in that run-down, crumbling ruin they called a haven of education? Maybe if they had proper signposting up like they did for the nice, modern, quantum sciences building, they’d-

“ERK!”
“Oooft.” Turning a corner at full tilt, the little dragon ran directly into Jessica, bouncing straight off her toned tummy and landing on his ass with an ominous crack. A worried frown flit across Jessica’s face for a moment – she hoped he hadn’t cracked his phone, or something like that. Or his spine. Or... she didn’t get a chance to consider it further, as a bright flash and crackle erupted around the pair, a warm glow of arcane energy wrapping around them, sparks of magic leaping around with the strong scent of ozone burning through the air.
“Uh... are you okay, kid?” Jennifer bit her lip awkwardly, extending a hand as she stooped over to pick up the squirmy little fellow.
“I’m not a kid, I’m older than you! Probably! T-that is, uh... um.” Taking a good look at his assailant, Tyler saw the attractive, somewhat savage hyena looming right over him – though he was used to the last part, being rather shorter than average. “I’m sorry?” he squeaked, his voice catching in his throat as he extended his hand weakly.
“Uh... don’t worry about it. It’s cool. I heard something go crack... you okay?”
“Ah, um...” Reaching into his back pocket, Tyler pulled out a strange, arcane device, all silver rings and shattered crystal – Jennifer assumed correctly that perhaps the crystal was not intended to be shattered. “Oh no, my arcane focus... that must have been what... oh god.”
“Arcane focus? Is that some weird dragon shit that us squishy, furry things aren’t privy to?” She smiled eagerly as she practically purred it, taking Tyler by the hand and practically scooping him up, his adorable little mug flashing fear and surprise as she pulled him in against her stomach. He flushed warm, a little embarrassed and awkward – a gorgeous girl (well, not quite – even he noticed the prominent bulge in those tight skinny jeans) getting so hands-on with him? Maybe the magic had killed him instantly and sent him to a better place than the depressing would-be wonderland that was AU. Oh right, the magic!

“Oh. Not quite. B-basically, they’re like conduits for magic. If you’re not good at it, like... well, everybody when they start out... you buy one of these and abracadabra, you can do basic-level magic. We... might have a problem, though, since I just sat on it and... released a little magic.” Tyler stammered and stuttered a little, the poor little thing simultaneously nervous about the magic mishap, utterly awkward and flustered under the attentions of the sultry shemale, and vaguely aware of the possibility deep in the back of his mind that he might not get the classes he wanted if he was any later than he currently was.
“Magic, huh. I learned a little about the history of Voodoo when in high school... but you’re probably the expert around here. What’s going to happen to us?” Jennifer ran a hand down the little guy’s back, feeling a little bad for him – Tyler looked out of his mind with worry, and so she drew him close, rubbed his back a little, tried to make him feel nice and comfortable...
“Um. Well. Right now? The spell I put through it last is stuck on autopilot, I can feel it. I bet you can, too – it’s like a pleasant tingle spreading throughout your entire body. We... ah, might have some problems, though. The last spell I used, was...”
