"The problem is, as much as I'd love to go before a judge and get officially married, you're still under home arrest," said Scalis.
Martha sighed. "I know." She sat down on the couch.
Scalis sat next to her. "If it makes you feel better, my answer would be 'Yes' to getting married."
Martha smiled. "Hopefully that's still true in three years."
"I hope so as well," said Scalis. "I've enjoyed your company these last seven years."
"If nothing else, you're the reason that my children are still with me," said Martha.
"I merely knew the right lawyers who knew the parental laws well enough to explain that after your ex-employer kicked you out after he had an affair with you, and it was discovered that you were pregnant with his children, despite him being married to a wealthy woman, that he gave up his parental rights the moment that he refused to be a father to them," said Scalis. "Then there was the laws that allowed me to be both the Legal Guardian of your children, and your employer, so that you could be with your children. To say nothing about the fact that you were allowed to stay here during your sentence."
.
"Yes," said Martha. "That makes things easier. Part of me wishes that I'd met you first, instead of....." She fell silent.
Scalis chuckled. "I know. You probably should have talked to someone like me, instead of trying to steal a bunch of the guy's jewelry, vandalizing the place and their vehicles, and took to breaking into other peoples' places to get food." He looked at her. "If nothing else, you broke into the right house that night."
Martha groaned. "My leg still bothers me on cold mornings."
"Not my fault you broke it while trying to escape when I found you stealing from my pantry," said Scalis.
"Guess that's one way of looking at it," said Martha.
Scalis smiled. "Still, best get ready ourselves for supper."
