Call Laura

    by: Pseudonym Author IconMail Icon
Laura groaned in the back seat of the family car.

"What's the matter Laura?" asked her dad, Ryan "Are you alright?"

"Just a bit sore after soccer practice" replied Laura "Even though I was on the bench half of the time... I'll never be any good at sport."

"There there - you're the smartest high school girl I know" consoled her mother, Stephanie "And besides, I think you played really well."

"Mom, we ALWAYS lose!" retorted Laura, her voice rising in frustration "This is our 14th consecutive loss, we've conceded 47 goals and scored NONE, and we haven't won a game, like, ever. All the other girls teams laugh at us because we're the loser team. Let alone what the boys think."

"Hey - I'm sure if Jack was here he'd say the same thing as we did" said Stephanie "He's such a nice boy, and you really did play well today, honestly."

Laura lowered her head and her cheeks blushed. "Don't talk about my boyfriend" she warned her parents. She wished her parents wouldn't take so much of an interest into her private life.

The car pulled up at their home, a middle class suburban brown brick dwelling near the bottom of a hill, surrounded on all sides by other nearly identical looking homes with large TV antennas. It wasn't the best area in town, and somewhat dirty, but it was a nice inconspicuous place for Laura to conduct her "secret" experiments. She loved learning about all aspects of science and doing her own research was the best part.

Laura hopped out of the car with some effort, due to her being sore from the game, on to the bare brown earth that substituted a driveway. She was still wearing her soccer gear, except for her boots which she had removed at the pitch, so she walked towards the front door in just her socks... when suddenly, her mom called out from the letterbox. "There's a package for you here, Laura! Looks like some kind of chemical."

Laura turned around. It was not unusual for her to order random chemicals she needed for her studies from the internet, but she didn't think she'd ordered anything recently. Nonetheless, she figured she'd take a look and see what it was. "Thanks mum" she said as she grabbed the container.

The next thing Laura did was go into the kitchen and make herself a snack. After having a bite to eat, she took the mysterious formula back to her room, feeling tired and worn out.

"Welcome home Laura" said her computer as she entered "Can I do anything?"

Laura smiled at her little AI bot in one corner of her desktop "No thanks. I've got to take a look at something."

"No problem" said the broken, synthesized voice "Just let me know if you need me."

Laura opened the package to find a plastic container of orange liquid, and a note, carefully packed away inside. First, she thought to read the note, and saw that it came from some student she'd met at a science fair some time ago.

Dear Laura,
This is a substance I've been working on for the last few years. It should, all going well, turn you into a Goddess. I figured you should be the one to test it. Please drink it and fulfill your destiny.
Thanks!

"Whatever" she chuckled "One heck of a prank"

Then, looking the container over, she added "This is pretty clearly just ordinary orange juice anyway. Oh well, might as well humor him."

With that, she opened up the container, slowly lifted it up to her waiting lips, and tipped it slightly. In slow motion the liquid inched closer and closer towards her body, time itself seeming to slow down to a standstill just a moment before the impact.

The next thing Laura knew, all around her was a bright light, as all the power of the universe and infinite power beyond crashed into her.

And then she woke up on the floor of her room, which looked exactly the same, only that the liquid inside the container was gone. Immediately, she felt different. All her aches from soccer practice were gone. Instead, she felt ... powerful. Like, everything around her was nothing compared to what she could do. There was a physical sense about her that space and time were bowing to her command.

"What the heck..." were her first words as a goddess, as Laura The Almighty stood up and glanced about.

"Are you alright?" asked her computer in concern.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just uh..."

No way could this be real she thought to herself in disbelief. If she was a goddess ... what did that mean? It was scientifically impossible! Was all her science for nothing since she could now change the very laws of physics on a whim? Somehow it made the rest of her life feel distant and irrelevant. Regardless, here she was, the one and only ruler of everything for all eternity. She was the alpha and omega, the all-powerful, the queen of queens. In the body of a young teenage girl. There was no denying it - in that instant, everything was clear to her. No doubt was in her mind about that or anything else - she was a goddess, and all that ever was, or would ever be, was hers to change as she liked.

"Just what?" asked her computer, interrupting her train of thought.

"Just feeling a bit strange" replied Laura, smiling.

"Would you like me to call a doctor?" asked the computer.

"Oh no, I'm fine."

With that, she started to think about how she should start using her unlimited powers.

You have the following choices:

1. Laura makes some changes to her life

2. Laura wants to talk to somebody about it first
