Chapter #4

Kimberly's present

    by: Wokod Author IconMail Icon
"Have a nice day honey !"

Kimberly's mother waved at her while driving away, letting her 17 years old daughter alone in front of the house. Kimberly stopped smiling as soon as the car was out of sight : she didn't want her mother to care about her mood. The truth was : she wasn't going to have a nice day. It would be, like each passing day, a horrible one. Kimberly wasn't ugly or anything, she was just average, but her real problem was that she was small. Like, really small. Even the smallest girls at school were looking down at her, as she was just 4'2 with A-cups, no hips and all. She was just looking like a pre-teen. And a slightly shrunken pre-teen. The doctor had told her mother that she had a rare condition making her body secreting almost no growth hormone, so she would have the body of a child for years to come, and be a shrimp with no curves for her whole life.

The kind of thing turning high school into a living hell, as it was the time of your life where any physical trait could make you the target of all the bullies around. So, for Kimberly, everyone was a potential bully. And she hadn't anything to compensate : she wasn't smarter than the average student, her family wasn't especially rich, and she had no gift for arts, languages or whatever. She was just a shrimp, and life sucked.

Kimberly sighed and, grabbing her bag almost as big as she was, she began to walk to the bus stop, but as soon as she was in front of her house, she noticed that there was something in the mailbox. The girl had to go tiptoe to open the thing and grab the package inside, and she frowned as there was no name on the brown paper wrapped around the thing, probably a box in. She just found a letter saying something about wishes coming true. Weird...

"Probably a new joke from Vanessa and her friends" sighed Kimberly, but still, she was curious and opened the thing to discover a silver and black dictaphone. She investigated the thing, searching for anything special, but didn't notice anything looking like a part of a joke. She even pressed the play button, and nothing was recorded in. If it was a joke, it hadn't worked : the dictaphone had no message in.

Kimberly, looking around, wondered if it could be what the paper was saying it was. She knew about the stories where a typewriter could make wishes come true by typing something, so what if...

She pressed the record button and said : "My house is yellow". It was worth a try. She laughed, finding herself stupid, when nothing happened after a couple of seconds, then she stopped when she saw a small flash coming from the dictaphone.

Instantly, she heard a sparkling sound and the walls of the house in front of her turned from white to a bright yellow. Kimberly was agape, and even more when she noticed how a man walking his dog and passing just next her didn't seem to react, even if the house had just changed color. Kimberly quickly grabbed her wallet in her backpack, and noticed a that the picture of her and her mother in front of the house had changed : it was now yellow !

"This thing is changing reality ? It's... AMAZING !"

The girl couldn't believe her luck and almost danced on the sidewalk, ready for some fun...
