Josh walked quietly near Kate's bed, and looked at her, sleeping and breathing slowly. He smiled, unsure about how to tell her about all this, and decided to improvise : he shook her shoulder, feeling her soft skin under his fingers, and whispered "Kate !" several times until she finally woke up, rubbing her eyes to double check what was happening. She looked at Josh, then at her clock, and frowned.
"Josh ? What the hell are you doing here ? It's 4 in the morning ! I was sure I had locked my window last evening, how did you...
- Shhhhh ! Don't wake your parents !
- For how long have you been there ? She said, a bit lower, using her blankets to hide her pajama from the boy
- I just came here, I needed to talk to you !
- Then let's talk about whatever it is tomorrow ! I need some sleep, I have some exams tomorrow and..."
Josh didn't want to lose some precious time, arguing with her best friend about when was the best moment to speak : he took the dictaphone and said "Kate's blankets are a flashy bright red, and she notices the change.". This was a stupid example, but it was the first thing that had crossed his mind. He heard the sparkling sound and Kate, who was looking at him with a very suspicious face, suddenly looked down to realize that, indeed, her blankets were changing color : she looked agape at the strange show, and pressed the switch of her lamp to have a better sight and study her blankets, now a flashy bright red, kind of childish. She raised her head to ask Josh what it was about, but saw behind her a picture changing on her wall, of her and some friends in her bedroom as a child, and the bed visible on it changing color too. She went, mute, to grab the picture and study it too, searching for a trick, and then eventually turned to Josh.
"How ? Why ? What ?
- I told you it was important : I found this device earlier in front of my door. And whatever I say in instantly becomes true. Understand why I thought 4 A.M was a good moment to talk ?
- You... you're damn right. I can't believe...
- Well, now you can.
- Did you say something about me noticing the changes ?
- Sure this thing change reality : it adapts to whatever you record in this. Except the person speaking in, no one can know that the reality had been altered.
- Josh... I need to know... did you change anything about me ? Or someone I know ? Or anything important I should know ?"
She was patting herself, searching for something different about her, a bit nervous at the idea of someone else toying with her.
"No, don't worry. I just did a few... uh... tests.
- Fine... I believe you. Everything still looks the same.
- Cool. But to be honest, if I had changed something, it would still "look the same" to you as for you it would have always been the truth.
- I'm not stupid : If you had changed something, even with altered memories, I'm sure I could find what you had altered.
- Ho no you don't.
- Ho yes I do !"
She punched slightly his shoulder, smiling. "So, Josh, you're now the most powerful best friend ever. What do we do now ?"
