“Pizna? Pinza? Pinna? Oh... Pizza. The Translator had a hard time picking out that word.” Avela nodded and had that information recorded.
Avela Kjar was conducting an interview with the Human Pathfinder, Scott Ryder, the topic for today was a rather laid-back one when compared to the on going fight against the remaining Kett in Heleus, but exciting none the less, Human Cuisine.
The Strict rationing that was done out necessity due to the ongoing war with the Kett made the traditional Human idea of agriculture and restaurants almost impossible. For the past 80 years, the Angara had to survive on a diet consisting solely of water, Nutrient Paste, a small candied seed type of snack, and the occasional alcoholic fruity beverage. Whole Fruits that were used to make the Nutrient Paste were only given out on rare usually ceremonial occasions, due to how rare and thus expensive the war made them. And as for the meat of the Ahdi, domestication of them had become impossible during the war, so getting their meat as anything other than a jerky-type field ration was all but impossible, especially for the Angara on Aya.
However, the arrival of Andromeda Initiative and the Milky Way species contained within, soon turned the tide in the war against the Kett. The introductions to Humanity and the other species were a little rough at first, but now, the Archon is dead, and the Kett have been almost completely driven out of Heleus, and as such, liberties that had been previously considered only the oldest Angara to be a distant memory, were now freely available again for the first time in decades!
Naturally, one of these liberties, was a much wider selection of food, as a Levo Species, all the cuisines of the Milky Way species except for Turian, were now open to the Angara.
As for Avela Kjar, she figured that she'd start with the cuisine of the Species of the man who made the cooperation between the Angara and the initiative possible.
Scott Ryder gave explanation of the dish, “Yes it's a human dish usually deployed on a happy night, it's a baked flat bread dish that topped with Cheese, Tomato Sauce, and a variety of vegetables and meats.”
“A variety?” Avela seemed confused by that.
Scott Ryder clarified as best he could, “Yeah, it's fully customizable, you can put whatever you want on it, A cheese called Mozzarella is the default, but you can put any kind of cheese you want on it, as for toppings, well they can be just meats, just vegetables, a combination of both, or even a fruit like Pineapple.”
“Hmm... fascinating.” Avela had that information recorded. “What about idiom of our soldiers have heard you and the other Humans use? Piece of Kake?”
“Ah yes, and it's pronounced Cake. It's a large elaborate dessert that Humans typically use on special occasions, usually a birthday or a wedding.”
“Is at as customizable as pizza?”
“Well... sort of. Cake is strictly a dessert so you can't normally put something savory on it like Meat from a Chicken. But you can top with any frosting you want, usually Vanilla or Chocolate, but sometimes people go for something fruity like coconut or strawberry.”
“And it's cut up into pieces”
“Yes, unless it's one that's made to be small enough to fit into a cup, which we call cupcakes, the cake is always cut up into pieces to be served, just the pizza, because it's too big to be eaten as a whole, especially for only one person.”
“And unlike the pizza, the cake comes in layers?”
“Yes, usually 2, but there are more elaborate examples that go up to 10. Each sandwiched together with Frosting.”
Avela raised a brow in confusion, “Sand-winched?”
Scott Ryder felt awkward, “ Right sorry... I forgot that you don't know what a Sandwich is...”
Avela took more notes. “Well now's the perfect time to explain.”
“It's a simple dish consisting of whatever spreads, meats, cheeses, or vegetables you want, held tightly together by 2 slices of bread, one on top, and the other on the bottom.”
“Fascinating, do go on.”
Ryder was about to explain further, when he held up his hand to his ear, “Sorry but SAM just told me that my crew and I are needed for another mission. Kett holdouts on Elaaden pestering the Krogan.”
Avela sighed and got up, “Understood, but I feel as though I still have so much more to learn.”
Ryder paused for a moment, and put his chin to his hand in thought, before answering. “If you'd like, I could talk to Vetra and make arrangements to deliver some Human Food to you, let you try it out for yourself. It would be a lot easier for you to do that, rather than have me explain every minute detail for you.”
Avela Smiled and agreed without hesitation.
-------------------------
The very next day, a crate containing frozen packets of various Human dishes arrived at Avela's office.
All the savory dishes were frozen, but they came with a simple VI program that would provide instructions on how to cook and them. In the meantime there were plenty of ready to eat dishes such as a few dozen chocolate bars.
Avela unwrapped one, curious about why Human women would go nuts over this brown bar said to contain sugar and milk in addition to this 'chocolate' substance... scans already confirmed that the substance was not poisonous to Angaran biology, so all she had to do now to learn about it, was taste it.
The first bite was one done out of curiosity, but when Avela took it, she froze, her eyes with amazement... And just like that... she was HOOKED! After living her whole life on Nutrient Paste and the occasional celebratory fruit due to the strict rationing that the war with the Kett brought, Avela found the her now much wider menu to be liberating.
She quickly lost control of her appetite, and quickly devoured bar, after bar, after bar, until there weren't any left in the crate.
Avela Kjar now perfectly understood why Human women, and even some Asari go crazy with glee at the mere mention of chocolate.
And there was also so much more than just chocolate!
Cakes! Frozen Treats! Pastries! Fried Foods! Barbecue Meats! Breads and Cheeses! All of it was now free for her to... explore... but the question on here mind now is...
“Where do I start?”
