Chapter #7

A Quarter-Ton of Quarian

    by: MightyHalberd Author IconMail Icon
In a quiet corridor of the Citadel, illuminated with a blood red floodlight, the turian associate of the rogue Spectre Saren drummed his fingers on the wall impatiently. Behind him, the two assassins backing him up paced back and forth anxiously. They were waiting for their target, a young Quarian with some information that would have...complicated Saren's current mission. Couldn't be an easier job in the world, save for the fact that the damn target was a no-show.

"Fist said she was coming here," the turian assassin growled, angrily kicking a nearby crate. "What's taking her so damned long?"

---

"Huff...huff...huff..."

Tali'Zorah nar Rayya was in agony, desperately trying to reach her contact with the Shadow Broker in time. Working her heavy legs one step at a time, she could manage little more then a light jog, and even then heat sensors were going off in her suit as she sweat profusely, the inside of her helmet fogging up from her heavy breathing before the atmospherics adjusted. Clearing yet another corridor, the effort to run further became too exhausting and she staggered to a stop, next to a bench where two asari were sitting on one side. The pair looked at the quarian girl with concern. "Do you...need any help?" one of them asked.

Tali wanted to scream yes, that someone was out to kill her and she desperately needed help, but thought better of it and shook her head. "No...just need a moment to...rest my legs..." Waddling, Tali turned around and plopped down on the bench with a heavy thud and an unsettling creak, filling the last two seats as her hips spread across the cold metal. The two asari looked awkwardly at one another and quietly made their escape, leaving the panting, overheating quarian behind.

Slowly getting her stamina back, Tali rested her hands on her belly, a blubbery mass whose two rolls and love handles were outlined by her ornately designed and somewhat tight containment suit. Thinking longingly of how much a chocolate nutrient shake would hit the spot right now, she promised herself a gallon of the stuff if she got through this alive, the thought of the deliciously sweet snack giving her just enough strength to keep going. Bracing her thick arms on the bench, she lifted herself off the bench, her couch-filling backside and doorway jamming hips lifting into the air on top of her tree trunk thighs, each of them larger around then those somewhat slender asari from earlier. She stumbled slightly as her legs took on all five hundred or so pounds of her again, but the quarian nevertheless braced herself for the next leg of the trip, hoping against hope the contact hadn't given up and left.

Before she started up though, there was a commotion as three people forced their way through the crowd and made a beeline towards her; Tali recognized the hulking figure of a red-armored Krogan accompanying a human and a turian both in combat armor and started to panic. Mercenary assassins, probably sent by the man on the recording! "Go away!" she demanded, pulling out a proximity mine and preparing to use it.

"No, wait!" the red-headed human woman with him said quickly, holding her hands up. "We're here to help you!"

"Fist set you up, you're heading into a trap," the turian, who Tali recognized as a C-Sec officer, warned her.

Tali blinked, trying to comprehend what was being told to her. "He...how do I know you're telling the truth? Where's Fist?"

"There she is!"

Tali turned around, seeing a darkly-garbed Turian stepping out of the doorway with a small team of masked goons at his back. He glanced between the Quarian and the red-haired woman and her squad, and his hand immediately jumped to his side arm. Realizing immediately what was happening, Tali lobbed the proximity mine at the turian's entourage and swung herself to the side as the bomb sent half the goons flying. A brief but violent firefight broke out, during which the Quarian stumbled backwards and crashed onto the bench again, the legs buckling as the flimsy metal sunk several inches under her weight. Head spinning as the gunfire slowly died down, Tali looked up to see the red-haired woman standing over her. "Okay, maybe you're telling the truth," Tali admitted. "Um, could I get a hand?" The woman and the turian took both of Tali's arms and helped her back to her feet as the Krogan put a few more slugs into the would-be assassins for good measure.

"That was a hell of a throw back there." the red-haired woman said admiringly, patting Tali's meaty shoulder.

"Well it's not like I could run away," Tali admitted sheepishly. "I appreciate the help though, but...who are you?"

"My name is Shepard. I'm looking for evidence to prove that Saren is a traitor."

"Then I think this will help," Tali said, her eyes glinting behind her mask. "But...not here. We should go somewhere safe."

"We should probably head to Udina's office," the Turian interjected. "He'd probably want to see this evidence too. We should get there as fast as possible."

Tali let out a small whimper, but nodded in agreement. "Let's go." The four then slowly made their way to the ambassador's office, and while the four kept their eyes open for any more assassins, Shepard's eyes lingered on the rather...rotund figure of the young Quarian waddling alongside her, her mind wandering slightly.
