“Chris!” Jenny felt herself smiling automatically as she moved across the shop. That was the effect Chris always had on her. He just had to be there to make her feel that little bit more alive. He turned at the sound of her voice, and the way his smile lit up his face sent a fresh wave of butterflies down her spine. She hadn’t thought that feeling like that could ever last long in a relationship, before Chris. But, five months in, here they were, and he made her as weak at the knees as ever.
“Jenny! Hello!”
Chris drew her into a close hug.
“How you doing, babe?” Jenny asked.
“I’m doing great. Friday was my last deadline before the holidays, so I decided to treat myself. What do you think?” He held up a shirt for her inspection.
“Oh, I think we can do better than that.” Jenny grinned, slightly ruining the effect by immediately scrunching up her face and rubbing her pinkening nose.
Chris frowned at her. “You alright, sweetheart?”
“Yeah. My nose has been driving me crazy today, is all.”
“Don’t know what’s got into it, eh?” Chris grinned, stupidly pleased with himself. Jenny punched him in the arm.
“My affliction is not a target for your terrible jokes.”
Chris laughed. “Fair enough. Does that mean I can make good ones?”
“You haven’t managed it yet.”
Chris put his hand over his heart- mock wounded. A moment later something seemed to occur to him, and he was semi-serious again.
“Oh, hey, Jenny? I know it’s a bit cheeky, but do you think I could crash on your sofa tonight? It’s totally cool if you’d rather I didn’t, it’s just that Kieran’s having one of his parties and I have work tomorrow.”
Jenny tutted.
“See, this is why you need to get a place of your own. Or at least find someone who occasionally consults you before they make plans.”
“Hey, Kieran’s not so bad. He just… forgets to consult his brain sometimes.”
