Chapter #8

Neil Prescott, the friendly classmate kind of g...

    by: Unknown
The sun was hot as Neil exited his house, walk on his patio through the trimmed grass yard towards the sidewalk and close the fence before heading out. He walk to his right and went straight ahead towards the old man's yard sale.

Neil Prescott, the friendly classmate kind of guy, living an average life in the city. He attends the same school as Julia Connors and they used to be best friends in kindergarten. Well, used to be close but now not so. While Julia grows up to be an attractive girl with many friends, he's just Neil who loves video games and is an avid fan of antiques.

He's the second child to a four-membered family. He lives with his mother, father and brother in a grand-looking two-stories house, quite big of a house and can be considered a mansion. His father, Thomas, is a minister and married to Lily, an architect. Due to his parents' career, their family can be considered a wealthy one. They live in a mansion with two maids and each of the family members' room has a LCD plasma screen TV. Although, the only kid that really took advantage of the family's richness was his older brother, Daryl. But enough about Daryl, he's a known bully at school and he's only one year older than Neil.

Neil's POV

There's so many antique stuff for you to choose from. There's the telescope, the figurine statues, ornament symbols, flags and others.
"Hi Neil!" Julia spots him in the crowd of buyers and proceeds to approach him. You felt something warm inside of him and its beating but he dismiss it, feeling it as a nuisance to the current situation.

"Hi Julia" Neil took quite a pause and replied when Julia got to him.

"What are you up to?" Julia asked him

"Oh, buying stuff, still deciding which one to buy. How about you?" Neil said and asked

"I'm buying this for my room, what do you think?" Julia shows you an antique banner crest, big enough to be noticeable in a room.
Your antique knowledge then kicks in, and started to tell her about the crest. You kind of enjoying yourself, not realizing that you're blabbering your way through the explanation. The good thing Julia wasn't interjecting and actually listened to the whole thing.

"Whoa, that's really cool." Julia's reaction to your explanation, "If you're working for the old man, you got me hooked to the whole thing!" Julia added. She then decided that she's going back to the antique sale and buy more stuff.

"Walk with me, Neil." Julia beckons him.
The two then spend time together through picking the antique stuff on sale and telling her about it. A while later, you felt that he needed to take a leak while Julia decided to start queuing for the checkout.

He asked permission to the old man on his terrace to use the restroom, which was located in his house. It took quite a while as the house seemed like a maze with that many walls and separations between rooms. Not to mention the antique stuff that the old man still kept around here and there which often shifted your focus.

As you finally arrived back to the outdoors, you decided to approach the old man, who remained sitting down at his terrace, to thank him and to talk about the antique artifacts in his house. While you had stood near him, he began saying first.

"She's a beauty isn't she?" The old man's vision was amongst the crowd of buyers before his wrinkled eyelid turning to you.

"Who?" You ask the old man, as he looked back towards the crowd. He seemed to be keeping an eye on something, or someone.

"Your friend thereā€¦" The old man meant Julia, whose still amongst in the crowds. Apparently she's still buying stuff for her room, with plenty of items already in her shopping basket.

"I think so." Neil said bluntly, following the feeling in his heart and not bothering to lie about it.
The old man then twitch his pointer finger, beckoned you to come closer.
You came forth a bit and stoop down, wondering what he needed from you.

He gave you some kind of scroll, saying that it contained supernatural powers and it could change your life.
You didn't thirst over the old man's words about its powers though curiosity about it sprouted from within you. You took the scroll that the old man handed to you, smiling as if glad as he did it. You asked him how much he had to pay for it but he's willing to give it for free.

"Oh no old man, let me pay for it." Not that you're rich and all, it just didn't feel right to take it for free where as others are paying for the old man's antique stuff. You put the scroll on the coffee table beside him before fishing out in your pocket for your wallet.

"Its okay, I insist... I actually wanted someone to have it and have fun with it." The old man quickly grabbed the scroll and push it towards your hand that's in your pocket.

"Here, old man." You handed him fifty bucks before he does so.

"Oh, I'm afraid the scroll's worth outweighs the value of the money you're giving me... and I'm willing to give it to you for free." The old man said to you with seriousness in his face, with his wrinkled lips turned crooked, and then followed by a smile from earlier that seemed genuine. You felt that doing what the old man said would be better now, so you take the scroll off of his hand and thank him.

"Thank you, old man, for the scroll." You said to him before turning your back.

"You're welcome... If you have any questions, don't hesitate to come back!" You heard the old man said after a while.

You then proceeded to go back home.

======================

At home, you're greeted by the presence of your mother at the front door. She's wearing her grey tux, black tight shirt and her black tight leggings. It seemed that she's just arrived from work. She smiled as you enter the house with her.

"Hi honey, how's your day?" Your mother asked as she closes the door

"Its been nice..." You simply said to her, "How about yours?"

"Mine's terrific! I finally got a new client, and he's a nice one." She said, which you're glad for her. Its been a while since she's starting to work on a project, having been at home for weeks doing nothing but watching TV, making delicious snacks, and asking 'how's your day'. Unlike other moms, she likes to put herself out there and develop her career further, even though the fact that your father is a minister of the country and earned enough money for the three of you in the day-to-day basis.

"That's great, mom!" You expressed your gladness for her.

"Thank you, honey. And for that we're going to celebrate! Dinner's at the fancy steakhouse!" She said, which arouses your excitement.

After few exchanges of explanations about your day at the antique sale, you head up to your room.
You roll out the rugged papered scroll on your hands, then notice a brief but large bold Latin writing on that side.
On the back, you noticed another Latin writing. But, compared to the first one, it was smaller and written in italic
"Cool!" You said, though you started to feel that it was an understatement considering the authenticity and the material of the scroll in your hands. And then some, reminder that the scroll worth way more than fifty bucks, as the old man said.

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. You read the scroll

2. Someone called you out

3. Skip to being a ghost in the Coopers' living room

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
