Chapter #5

Other choices

The night was dark and cold. The snow was blowing horizontally through the village, and everybody had retreated to their homes for the night. Even the livestock was safely protected in the barns and outbuildings of Berk.

Hiccup was getting Toothless to blast a rock repeatedly just to heat his home. Stoick had considered keeping everyone in the Great Hall, but it wasn't best suited for all the villagers to sleep there and he was sure the storm would blow itself out... well some time during the night.

Toothless looked mournfully at the door. He enjoyed riding the wild currents of a stormy sky... what dragon didn't enjoy the wind beneath it's wings.

Hiccup felt sympathy for his dragons desires, but really didn't fancy taking him up in this weather. He felt sure that his father was right, and it would be rather hard to hide his absence when they were both in such close proximity.

Besides even with his warmest clothes and riding Toothless, he didn't have the same fire in his belly as a dragon. He curled up in the living room, resting his head against Toothless's flank, he was soon asleep. Hiccup didn't wake when his father covered him with a blanket, although Toothless had a wary eye on him.

Satisfied that his son was warm and protected he went off to bed himself. After all, it had been a tiring day preparing the village for the storm. But the black clouds on the horizon hadn't been hard to read.

The only thought that troubled him was Gobber. His friend had chosen to stay at his forge, rather than shelter at home.

But Gobber was resilient, and he assured himself wise enough to go home if he needed. With a deep yawn, he stretched and headed off to bed.

Outside the wind howled, the clatter of an unsecured shutter punctuation the night. But this was no ordinary storm.

Pink sparkles glittered among the snow, as it crashed through Berk, bringing unforeseen consequences to the village.
