They soothed and calmed him, even holding Meatlug in place. Distantly, he heard some awful noises, but they couldn't break him free from the fascinating expression of this incredible new dragon.
He was locked in place, as winds buffeted around him. The gust of a dragon landing, and flying straight off. He recognised Astrid's voice, a battle cry, and then it was silent. Torn with emotions, he managed to shift his gaze briefly. Spotting Astrid frozen in place, as he realised he was too.
His hope seemed to fly away with Stormfly who was heading back to Berk. But those damned eyes snapped him back to immobility. He was powerless to do anything, as it approached the frozen Astrid, his wide mouth, filled with razor sharp teeth easily big enough to bite her in half. But, it's nostrils snuffled, as it sniffed her from head to toe.
Her breathing was irregular and strained. Fishlegs realised, she was still fighting, and that renewed his resistance. Though he was still held immobile. Ponderously, it approached him next. Before he got a whiff of it's fishy breath, snorted in his face.
Tilting it's head one way then the other it seemed to muse on what to do. Returning to the new grunting Astrid, she sounded like she was making progress. But as soon as the dragon faced her down, the grunts decreased in volume. Nodding it's heavy head with resolution. It took a few steps backwards.
Unsure whether he expected it or merely dreaded it. He couldn't even cry out, as a gout of emerald green flames gushed from it's open mouth. In moments engulfing Astrid, the flames erased her from his sight, before reaching him, too.
Instinct shut his eyes, and he felt the heat wash over his body. He felt his clothes turn to cinders, and those cinders be blasted away, too.
It felt like his body was melting... No! Not melting, transforming. His eyes refused to open, as he felt himself topple forward, still frozen he landed on hands and knees, as the flames continued to consume him.
Finally the warm wind seemed to stop. Fishlegs looked around, spotting only a Gronkle where Astrid had stood. Feeling his muscles unlock, he raced off. Ignoring the gust of the dragon's wings as it took to the air. It took him a few moments to realise he was running on all fours.
The thunderous pounding of a Gronkle followed, it had to be Meatlug. It was only as he reached the safety of a nearby rock, that the rush of adrenalin left his body. As his pulse returned to something more normal, he was finally able to take in his own change.
Looking around, he realised he was a beautiful sturdy Gronkle. A second look, revealed a scowl on purple gronkle's face that identified it as Astrid.
