Chapter #5

The Elder Scrolls: Avatars of the Deadra

    by: Yote Author IconMail Icon
The Elder Scrolls: Avatars of the Deadra game cartridge stands out among the rest for the elaborate fantasy runes etched into the plastic shell. You choose that one, and he takes it and slots it into the console, which comes alive with the loud hum of internal cooling fans. He adjusts the slim metal headset on his head and reclines on the bed, and you realise this is it, your moments away from your first taste of VR.

"Good choice, you can help me conquer Tamriel," he says, plumping his bed cushions and settling his head in them. "Slight tip - get comfortable, otherwise you'll wake up with a hell of a crick in your neck."

You lie yourself out on the floor, but find it hard resting your head with the bulky apparatus screwed to your skull. "Can I get a pillow?"

"No," he says flatly. "Now when you first log in, it's going to prompt you to choose a Daedric Prince and a race. The Daedra is kinda like choosing a class, basically you get a few perks and abilities to start you off according to which deity you choose. I want you to choose.Malog Bal and Imperial."

"Why?"

"Because last time I logged off, my character was locked up in the Imperial City dungeons, and I don't have the gold to bribe my way out. Malog Bal worshippers get a bonus to persuasion, and the Imperials get the Voice of the Emperor perk. I want you to use them to talk them into releasing me. Okay?"

"Malog Bal. Imperial. Got it." A shrill whine like a dentist drill is slowly growing in your skull, and snaps of static jump through your hair. "Is this going to hurt?"

"First time... yeah, probably. Try not to bite your tongue off."

A spinning circle of lights on the front of console counts down. Five... four... three... two... one...

You're aware of a sudden searching pain in your skull, but only for a fraction of a second before it is torn away, along with every other sensation. You're blind, deaf, unable to feel any part of your body, just floating in an abyss. The seconds seem to crawl past. Has something gone wrong? What if you were stuck like this. What if the headset burned out your brain - you've heard a rumor that sharing headsets could do that.

You've never been happier to hear the voice of Patrick Stewart, as the intro finally starts to run. Seems they got him back for the sequel. You listen to the narration of Uriel Septim, as the familiar music swells.

Light slowly filters into the darkness. You are standing in some sort of circular chapel made of pale stone. Statues of the daedric princes are spaced in alcoves around in the room. You realise that the game is asking you to choose a class, but for a long time you simply stand, staring at your hands, the floor, the sunlight filtering through the stain glass window, lancing through the air smoky with sweet incense. Beyond the walls, you can hear the sounds of a city, people going about their business. The experience is far better than anything you could have hoped, and you struggle to convince yourself that right now you're laid out on your brother's bedroom floor.

You remember that Ryan is waiting for you to get him out of jail, and you scan the statues, searching for the Daedra to which you must swear fealty to.

You have the following choices:

1. Malog Bal

*Noteb*
2. Ignore your brother's orders, choose another

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
