Alex's heart pounded in her chest as she sat on the walkway, her eyes locked onto Ian. She could hear the distant chatter of classmates and the rustle of clothing being moved around, but none of that mattered to her. She barely registered the sounds as she watched Ian, totally lost in her imagination.
Suddenly, without warning, the walkway beneath her creaked and shook, sending Alex and who knows how many flecks of dust tumbling through the air. She let out a brief, startled scream as she plummeted towards, well, she couldn't tell. Her weightless body turned and twisted in mid-air as she flailed her arms, instinctively trying to grab onto something. But there was nothing to hold onto.
