John was woken up from his slumber by Tabitha. They took turns guarding the caravans in pairs, and after 3 hours, they woke up their other companions for their shift.
But John could tell by the way the vixen looked at him that something was horribly wrong and that this wasn't going to be an ordinary shift.
Tabitha said urgently to him, "John, we are under attack! Cassy spotted raiders!''
A few minutes later, john ran out of his tent, hastily trying to pull up his breeches and adjust his leather shirt that barely covered his bulging gut.
There was not time to put on the rest of his armor. He had to fight basically in his underwear. With his sword in hand, he arrived at the outskirts of the camp where the rest of his companions had gathered.
"Where are they?'' said John, scanning the darkness.
"Over there," said Marty, still groggy from sleep, pointing with his staff to the road ahead.
It took a few moments but John finally saw them slinking through the darkness, gathering into a small army and marching towards them.
They were small, barely three feet tall, scaly creatures with stubby snouts. Kobolds.
These little pests were weak on there own, but in groups they proved a formidable challenge.
John was just glad they were meeting these nasty creatures toe to toe instead of next to their sleeping bags. Cassy and Tabitha's vigilance might have saved them.
"Alright, guys, let's give these beasts a run for their money,'' said John.
His companions didn't need and further encouragement. They charged into battle.
