"That poor little thing." Alice said in the break room later that day while snacking on some brownies. "Did you see her? She knows she doesn't fit in, but she's not sure what to do."
Courtney disagreed. "She knows. She just doesn't want to."
"Well, I think we need to help her." Victoria said.
"Yeah." Alice agreed, slurping down her second milkshake of the break. "We should help her."
Melissa chimed in. "It won't be hard to do. That little twig would get bigger if she just started to join us for a break a day."
"So it's settled, then." Victoria said.
Jenna lumbered in at that moment. "What's settled?"
"We need to make Christina a bigger part of the team." Alice answered.
"I was thinking that same thing." Jenna offered. "Has anyone seen a red velvet cake?"
"Oops." Courtney muttered, brushing red crumbs from her globular belly.
"That's OK, Courtney." Jenna said. "We're going to have a meeting this afternoon to offer Christina a bigger role in the organization. I'll make sure there's plenty of cake."
An hour later, the girls were gathered around the conference room table. The seat at the end was left for Christina. At every seat, each of the girls' favorite foods were piled high.
Jenna addressed the group while they gorged themselves: "So you see, ladies, our business is expanding, and we need to find the right person to help it grow."
Christina had butterflies in her stomach. Could this be her big chance?
Jenna winked at Victoria.
"How about Christina?" Victoria asked.
"I don't know." Jenna answered. "Christina, are you ready for an opportunity like this?"
"I'll try." Christina replied meekly.
"No." Jenna scolded. "I need more than that."
"Like what?" Christina asked.
"Show me that you're committed!" Jenna barked. "Eat this cake!"
Jenna slid a red velvet cake across the table while the others watched in anticipation. They snacked on their own goodies as though they had popcorn at a movie theater, giant tubs of popcorn drowned in butter and covered in chocolate.
Christina was still full from lunch, but she knew that she had to do this. At first it was going down on pure adrenaline, but then the task in front of her started to unfold. She made it through the first 3/4 before the taste started to make her sick. The girls encouraged her on with every bite, and that kept her going until the last piece. At that point, blind ambition took over. She was going to make it here, by God! She was going to do whatever it took, eat all of the cake, be the biggest star in this company!
And with that, it was gone. The women roared their approval, and knew that they would be seeing big things from little Christina, but none of them could know just how big.
