This choice: Your crush isn't into guys. • Go Back...Chapter #4Your crush isn't into guys by: XYXX You first met Annie a few months ago. You were instantly smitten with her and soon began trying to win her over, but although she seems to like you well enough, she appears to avoid spending too much time with you. And every time you make her a little too happy, her mood suddenly takes a nosedive.
Today, though, she's asked you to meet at her at the local diner (which exists in a post-scarcity world for a few reasons, but mainly "why the heck not"), with the implication that she'll explain herself.
You arrive and quickly spot her sitting at a table, drinks already there for both of you. She waves and gives you a sweet but nervous smile as you approach. "Thanks for coming, Bruce."
"No need for that," you say suavely as you pull up a chair. Was that suave? Probably not.
"So, I... I should get to the point. You're a great guy, Bruce, and I'm sure you'd be a wonderful partner." Awesome. "But..."
Uh-oh. You spend the longest two seconds of your life waiting for her to finish the sentence...
"If you really want to be with me... there's something you have to do."
"Anything," you instantaneously reply.
Annie's sad eyes imply she doesn't quite believe you. She takes a deep breath and holds it for a second before letting out, "You'd have to be a woman."
You barely keep yourself from spitting out the mouthful of drink you had taken because you were so damn confident you wouldn't be shocked.
"I'm sorry," Annie says in response to your bug-eyed expression. "I want to give you a chance, but I just don't like men..."
"Couldn't you get..." ...your sexuality adjusted? No, no, that's a dumb thing to say. You cut yourself off, but too late. Annie looks a little hurt.
"You don't mean that, Bruce," she says.
"No, I don't," you sigh. "Sorry." You certainly wouldn't ever consider having yourself made attracted to guys. You've heard horror stories of people who got talked into having their orientation changed and went almost mad when they couldn't deal with the results.
"This is all I can offer you, Bruce," Annie says, slouching in her chair a little. "I suppose it was too much to hope that you'd be the type not to mind the idea."
That actually gets you thinking. You do know at least one person who switched sexes years ago and has never wanted to go back. And you've heard of folks who change bodies on a regular basis just to put some variety in their lives. If they can do it, why can't you?
So you lift your head and say, "I'll do it."
Annie perks up. "Really? You will?"
"Sure," you say. Although... you don't know how well you could handle it, and perhaps you shouldn't get her hopes up, so you add, "I mean, no reason not to try it, at least."
Nonetheless, Annie smiles warmly. "Thank you, Bruce." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
