You never knew dad to keep any secrets so you walked into his study and asked him about where James was all year. Dad sighed then turned to you, silent for a moment. "It's really not a secret, honey." calmly, he said. "It's a time honored family tradition among the boys and James is simply not sure how to explain it without you feeling left out."
"So its a boy thing?" curious, you asked. "How bad can it be? Tonya and I do things James, Tex, and Mat would not enjoy participating in so what's the big deal?"
"It goes deeper than it simply being a 'boy thing'." wearily, dad said. "Your mom and I were worried for you the moment you were born as we had no way of knowing if you had her talent."
"Her talent?" tears forming, you asked.
Mom had passed away shortly after giving birth to Mat, something we all promised never to tell him. It still hurt, I missed her a lot and I turned to dad, almost crying. "Please...What do you mean her talent?" you asked.
Dad sighed. "I'm sorry, Jessica." with a sad look, dad said. "I simply can't tell you until the time is right." you began to cry and dad slowly rose from his chair. "Please try to understand, I'm not doing this to hurt you."
You did not want to hear any more, you ran from dad's study, crying and stormed into your room, slamming the door. No one came to your door for the rest of the night and you did not bother to come down for dinner, you stayed in your room, hurt and confused. Why was the family suddenly keeping secrets and why did dad bring up mom, it still hurt not having her around. "I miss you, mommy..."
