Claire sat amidst the gaggle of teenage divas, chatting animatedly with the ostensibly admiring crowd. Their happiness was muddled, tainted by veiled jealousies and ambitions, but it grated against your mind all the same. As a metaphysical being of unfathomable power, the effort it took to rip the young girl through the fabric of time was laughably infinitesimal. She was flung backward an even one hundred Earth years into the past, her disappearance from the grounds of that loathsome school no more than a sudden *pop*, like a cheap parlor trick.

In what seemed only an instant, Claire experienced a sudden and intense nausea accompanied by a strong tug just behind her navel, and she plummeted into darkness. When she regained consciousness, she was laying on a slick bed of peat moss, the smell of sulfur and methane heavy in the humid air. She sprang to her feet, heart racing as she jerked her gaze this way and that, examining her foreign surroundings.
Claire seemed to be in some sort of marsh-like clearing in a forest, encircled by a surreal arrangement of enormous ferns and vibrant, sickeningly pungent flowers. Her shirt and yoga pants were smeared with grime and mud, and her hair was a tangled mess, stuck to her face in odd places. The pure bizarreness of the place was triggering Claire's fight-or-flight reflex - she felt compelled to sprint away from the clearing, to seek some sense of a grounded reality...
