Chapter #4

Eve discovers super hearing

    by: Pseudonym Author IconMail Icon
Eve arrived at the park and found that she wasn't actually as late as she thought she would be. In addition, even though she thought she had been running pretty fast, she didn't feel tired at all. In fact, she felt already warmed up and ready for practice. For the most part, though, Eve had been too distracted with playing with her new power to notice anything unusual about that. It had been fun seeing inside everybody's homes as she had run past.

Coach Bricks blew his whistle and all the nine boys and five girls stood to attention. "Alright, we're all here, we can start now!" he bellowed "Warm up exercises everyone! Copy all these stretches as I do them!"

With a collective groan, the whole team stood around and started copying the coach's stretches. Eve got bored quickly, as her body seemed already more than warmed up. Soon enough she'd looked through everything nearby, and as bursting as she was to tell everyone about her power, she also knew better than to interrupt the coach. Coach Bricks hated it when people interrupted him. He was a good coach though.

"Alright, ball skills!" yelled the coach, blowing his whistle again "Everybody, I want you to get a ball out of that bag over there, and dribble it across the pitch and back, staying in line with the rest of the team. Go!"

Once again all the kids got moving on the coach's command. As Eve dribbled her ball across the pitch, she noticed that her teammates seemed slower than she remembered them. Soon her mind was wandering again, as she wondered what Jess and Sophie were up to at the mall.

Just then, very softly at first but increasingly clearly, she heard some voices in the distance. It was Jessica and Sophie!
"Wow, check out that shirt!" Jessica was saying excitedly.
"Told you this store was the best" replied Sophie.
"This shirt is totally rad. I wish I could buy it." continued Jessica, a little more sadly.
"You want this shirt?" said Sophie, and Eve could practically hear her pulling out her designer wallet.
"Well, actually I was thinking this one will look good on Eve" responded Jessica nervously.
Sophie laughed. "Yeah it would! I'll get it for her, no problem. She'll love it!"
"Must be nice to be able to walk around with a huge wad of cash like you always do..." muttered Jessica.

Eve got excited. Was she really hearing what her friends were up to? There was no way that could be possible - could it? Because that would be amazing. Eve supposed there was only one way to check. Using her new vision powers, she turned her head in the direction of the store and focused really hard to see if she could catch a glimpse of her friends.

She was snapped out of it in a flash by the blow of the coach's whistle. "Eve!" bellowed Coach Bricks "Come back here!"

Just then Eve realized that she'd lost her concentration, being too wrapped up in using her powers, and had jogged with the ball all the way to the other side of the field, far beyond the pitch. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" she repeated as she ran back to her teammates.

"Eve, you're acting strange today. You're never usually late to practice and when I say you should run with the group, I mean that you should run with the group. Is that clear?" asked the Coach.
"Yeah, coach. I'm sorry coach." muffled Eve, a little dejectedly, and making a mental note to try not to use her new powers too much. Still, she was incredibly curious as to whether she had actually heard her friends or not.

"Alright Eve, you're usually good, so I'll let you off with a warning" said the coach "Don't let that happen again. In the game of soccer, you have to keep your eyes on the ball and know what's happening around you at all times."
"I'm really sorry coach" continued Eve "I promise, this will really be the last time!"

The agent and the secretary flew back together on a top-secret private jet.

"The chief was looking chipper" remarked the agent.
"Don't get complacent" warned the secretary "who knows, a superhero could arise a wreck our plans."
The agent laughed. "You've been watching too many movies. Superheroes aren't real! They're scientifically impossible. In reality, we evildoers can do whatever we like, whenever we like. It's just one of the perks of being a bad guy."
The secretary shrugged and turned a cold shoulder to the agent. "Don't get complacent."

---

As soon as practice was over, Eve started going back home. She couldn't wait to see if she had super hearing now as well. Of course she no longer was sure where her friends were, as no matter how hard she listened she could no longer hear them, although she could hear other voices and other conversations quite clearly. In fact at one point she was even sure she could hear the radio waves in the air if she focused for a moment.

She continued her walk home thinking that it might be weird if she moved her head around looking for her friends in all directions, but that she could practice looking through things a little bit again. She started practicing on mailboxes, trying to quickly read people's mail as she passed. She giggled as she read a love note from somebody's sweetheart. It started to annoy her reading all the junk mail around the neighbourhood though. For some reason she'd assumed that only her family got it.

As she practiced her power, she noticed that she wasn't just focusing through things - she was actually instinctively focusing in on things. It dawned on her that her eyes actually had no problem seeing faraway things in minute detail, as though they were extremely powerful telescopes. She had no trouble zooming even further in, she realized, first seeing the individual ink drops on a certain letter, and then zooming in further to see individual bacteria crawling around on the surface.

Just then, she suddenly bumped into a lampost. It didn't hurt at all but it probably looked silly.
"Watch where you're going!" called an old lady across the street.
"Sorry!" Eve called back. She REALLY had to stop over-using her powers, difficult though that was.

When she arrived home, she rapidly found the hidden spare key and dashed inside, finding her cellphone where she'd left it. In a flash she called up Jessie.
"Hey, Jessie here"
"Hey Jessie, it's Eve. How was the shopping trip?"
"Oh, you will NOT believe what we found!"
"Yeah - well you won't believe what I've discovered either. Did you find me a new shirt?"
"What? How did you know?"
"Did Sophie pay for the shirt?"
"Well of course, yeah... but honestly, how did you know we got you a shirt?"
"I heard you as you bought it."
"What? Were you stalking us in the store or something? That's so creepy!"
"No no! It isn't like that, see, I've been developing these powers..."

And with that, Eve started to explain to Jessica everything.

You have the following choices:
