"Good morning Ms. Hale," Emma Nail said as she watched Matt's eyes flutter open in the chair. "How are you feeling?"
"Mmmm," Mat said as he sat up and stretched in the chair. "Invigorated, as usual Em, but can you can the immersion bit for a few minutes?"
"Of course Mr. Landry," she said somewhat dryly, handing him the file on Lisa's life. "Here's the file on Ms. Hale. Everything you asked for in your request: good looking, successful, all american girl. Fairly traditional family, college bound, just graduated from high school."
"Good, good," he said, flipping through the file and looking over the details of her life. "Doesn't smoke, doesn't drink," he muttered, taking in more details. "Just broke up with her boyfriend and doesn't particularly want to get back together with him, poor bastard," Matt continued. "And the other bit?"
"Right here," Emma said, pulling out a large envelope filled with cash. "Matt, I can't keep doing this," she said as she handed the bundle over to him. "It breaks all of the rules we've set at the Nexus. The clients who rent out their lives are trusting us to make sure that the life they come back to is fairly similar to the one they left..."
"Too fucking bad," Matt said, taking the envelope and counting through the bills to make sure it was all there. "They sign a waiver and I've read the damn thing, I'm not breaking any rules."
"Yes, but Matt," she said, hoping she could talk him out of his plans. "Most of our clients want to vacation in someone else's life to experience something different from their own. To get an escape. They don't rent someone else's life to see how badly they can mess it up!"
"Not my problem Em," he said, slipping out of the chair and waiting for the disorientation to pass as he realized how much this Lisa girl must be. He was used to things looking bigger when he took over the life of a woman, but he didn't think he'd ever taken on the life of someone quite as small as Lisa Hale was. "She's renting out her life and I'm paying handsomely to do what I want with it. If what I want happens to be doing things completely different than what she normally does, so be it."
"Maybe I should just phone Ms. Hale... let her know what your plans are so she can show your life the same respect you're intending to show hers?" Emma was bluffing, but she didn't know what else to do. The last girl that Matt had rented was still going through rehab for the heroin addiction that Matt had acquired while partying away in her life, and the one before that was had given up on ever losing the weight she'd gained when Matt decided to spend two months on a couch catching up on three years of television he'd been too busy to watch in his own life.
"Go ahead. Tell her," Matt said, calling her bluff. "Maybe I should drop by the Board... I'm sure a few of the new members would be happy to find a reason to dismiss you and I'm sure there are dozens of people they could think of to take over the life of Deputy Director Emma Nail for the next twenty to thirty years."
"All right, fine," Emma said, slumping in defeat. "You win Matt. Just... just consider giving it a try okay? Lisa's a good girl and her life could be a nice break from the kind of stress you usually deal with. Take the money in that envelope and spend it to have a really relaxing vacation or something. Whatever. It's your vacation. I'll leave you to get dressed unless you need anything more from me?"
"No, that will be all Em," he said in clear dismissal as he picked up Lisa's clothes. For a moment, he considered the small, plain white bra in his hands before he shoved it in her purse along with her panties. She might not have the kind of jugs that made men stare no matter what she wore, but there were other ways to make sure people noticed her body and if that meant going braless, he was fine with that.
