"Some immigrants have a hard time adjusting to American life; most are very poor and have little prospects for success. Also with this program, not only do we switch out lives, but language skills as well. It's a relatively new program and nobody has used it yet." Tina said as Lisa listened on.
Tina could tell Lisa was at least interested in seeing who she could become. "Here's the first few we have.." she said as she handed Lisa some profiles.
The first one was Jinghua Zhao, a 20 year old Chinese immigrant who recently fled to the US and managed to receive a green card. She speaks almost no English and her work bounces around between stocking shelves at a local produce market and cleaning houses on the side to make end met. Her dream is to go to college and become a software programmer.
The second one was Maria Lopez, a 31 year old Mexican immigrant who entered the US illegally several years ago. Her dream is to find a good man and settle down and raise a family; but without and paperwork and very poor English speaking skills, she is constantly taken advantage of and barely manages to survive. A nonprofit is helping her get her green card. If you choose her, you'll have to live under the table for a while until you become legal.
The third one was Priya Bhatia, a 39 year old Indian immigrant that has lived in the US for almost 11 years. She has 3 children, two of which are adults. She and her husband manage a gas station. She speaks enough English to get by, but with a heavy accent. Although she loves her family, she regrets the direction she took her life. Priya would love to start her life fresh and become a playwright or stage actor on the Broadway.
