Chapter #7

Don't Try This at Home

    by: Unknown
"Let's just wait here. Maybe a search party will come by."

"Are you sure? I doubt anypony will find us. The Everfree forest is huge."

"That may be true, but it's our only option." You said, staring into the campfire, trying to figure out how you're going to get out of this mess. You could just leave her behind and walk back to town yourself, but you don't think you could live with yourself if you did that. As you sat there, you noticed Dash wobble a bit, her eyes fluttering and her breathing labored. "What's wrong? Do you feel lightheaded?"

"I'm fine, I'm f-f-fine..." She groans dismissively, not being able to help stuttering as she talks.

You sigh, standing back up on your hooves. "No, you're not," you insist, looking her dead in the eye. "You're bleeding out."

She grimaces, looking down at her foreleg. Her wound couldn't even be seen anymore through all the blood that was coating her leg. The cut must've gone much deeper then you had thought.

"What can we do?"

You think about it for a minute. You know of one thing you can do, but it's risky. If you mess it up, it would make her wound even worse. It seems like it's your only option now, though.

"With a hot enough tool, we can seal the wound shut. No more bleeding."

"Won't that hurt?"

You grimace. "Yeah. It'll hurt like hell. But with a wound like that, we don't have a choice." You give her a reassuring jab to the shoulder. "But you're tough, aren't ya? You can handle it."

She recomposes herself as well as she could, giving a small nod. "Yeah. Yeah, I can," she says under her breath, with a semblance of a smile. "So, what do we have to do?"

You start sorting through the nearby litter. "Just lay back and brace yourself."

You grab some scrap metal from the litter around the campsite and heat one end in the fire until it's almost red hot. You walk over to Rainbow Dash, who was lying on her back in the dirt, her injured forehoof propped up against the log, her eyes squeezed shut.

"You sure you know what you're doing?"

"Yeah, of course I do." You assured her, even though you honestly had no idea. "Just control your breathing and bite down on something. You'll be fine."

She took a deep breath as you edged the utensil closer to the wound.

------------------

You sighed, looking at the pegasus who was sleeping in the dirt beside you, illuminated by the nearby fireplace. Her wound looked even more disgusting now, but at least it wasn't bleeding anymore. The cauterization was fairly successful, you suppose, but you couldn't get the sizzling sound out of your mind. She wasn't lying when she said she was tough- you probably cringed more then she did. After the cauterization, you cleaned her wound as best you could and wrapped a scrap of what was left over of her torn-up jumpsuit around some of it as a makeshift bandage, before letting her get some much-needed rest.

You looked up at the stars, lying on your back. You suppose you should sleep as well, but you just couldn't no matter how hard you tried. You sighed, getting to your hooves. You suppose you should use this time to look for supplies or shelter instead of just wasting it.

You wander off into the trees, making sure to remember where you are, as it's very easy to get lost in a forest as dense as the Everfree. After a few minutes of walking, you see in the distance...
