This choice: The calendar (1% an hour for a year) • Go Back...Chapter #4The calendar (1% an hour for a year) by: Big Boy   ...the one with the calendar. Although a part of him wanted the idea to get big fast, he didn't want to grow TOO fast that it would draw attention, but the eternal option seemed like it would be too slow for his liking. He was willing to wait a year for his growth, and enjoy every day of it. Quietly he slipped the card into his pocket for safe keeping. He was still a little doubtful that it would work, but a kid could dream couldn't he?
For the next hour Kyle followed his brothers on rides and carnival games, but his focus kept on going to his watch. The man had said he would grow every hour with this card, but so far he hasn't noticed a thing at all. Was he already bigger? Has it already been an hour yet? Kyle waited breathlessly as it got closer and closer, the minutes ticking down on his watch. He felt his heart beat fast as it finally gotten to the last minute. Kyle told his brothers he needed to use the restroom and slipped away, anxious to get his first growth. He looked down at the watch, his heart beating fast as the seconds ticked down.
57...58...59...
The exact moment it hit 1 Kyle felt something like butterflies in his stomach and a slight sense of vertigo. Excited, he checked himself, looking himself over trying to see a difference. He didn't find anything different however.
Was the card really bogus after all? Or was it so small he couldn't notice? Kyle remembered then that the man said he would only grow 1% at a time. Of course it was so small he couldn't notice.
"Dammit, maybe I should have picked the first card." Kyle muttered. At least then he wouldn't have to wait in anxiety for results. Feeling a bit dejected, he headed back to his brothers. On the way, he passed by a height marker for a ride. Curious, he stood next to it and measured his height. He had had it measured at the last ride, so he knew he was 4'8" even. When he measured himself now, however, he found himself closer to 4 foot eight and a half inches.
Did he really just grow half an inch? Or was he just being hopeful? His heart started beating faster at the thought. If he grew half an inch in just an hour, then in a few hours how much will he grow? A bit excited again, Kyle rejoined his brothers with a slight grin on his face.
After squeezing in one more ride, Kyle and his brothers headed home. When no one was looking, he marked his height on the wall to measure his progress, then went to bed, already eager to see how much he'll have grown in the morning.   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
