This choice: Isaac puts on the freshman 15... in a week • Go Back...Chapter #5Isaac puts on the freshman 15... in a week by: Inthecourt Isaac pulled at the drawstring of his sweatpants nervously. These had been the only pair of pants that fit him comfortably a week ago. Now they were his only pair that fit. Period. He had been out of control. He was binging and he wasn't burning. He had missed the gym every day this week but it seemed like he had missed every day for a month. His muscles appeared to be quickly dwindling. Shirts were fitting differently. Where they had usually outlined his shoulders and muscled chest and been snug on his chiseled arms, they now were kind of loose there and clung uncomfortably to a somewhat doughy midsection. His midsection wasn't the only thing that was growing though. What he had originally attributed to gluteal growth as a product of increased squat weight and repetitions proved to be a double dose of adipose on his backside and thighs. They were hardly huge- in fact he now looked more normal than anything, but Isaac felt incredibly out of shape.
He finished off a Snickers bar as the nurse called him into her office. He tossed the wrapper as she opened the door and let him in. He knew there had to be something wrong with him- a bug he was coming down with or something...
"Lemme make sure I follow you," the nurse said, looking at Isaac and then his file, "decreased energy for exercise, increased appetite, and a shift toward a more sedentary lifestyle..."
She looked at his file once more and couldn't even suppress a smile. She was a heavy-set matronly woman just past 40.
"You've even put on exactly 15 pounds since your last check up. Is there really any doubt about what happened here?"
"15 pounds?"
"Yep, you're at exactly 165 pounds as of today. You were 150 two months ago..."
"But this only started last week-"
She wouldn't hear such nonsense, "Look, there's nothing to be ashamed of. College is stressful. Some people eat as a coping mechanism. The very fact you've come here today is a good sign. You can easily nip this thing in the bud. You're young. With your metabolism, you can drop this weight as if it were nothing."
"Right, but-"
"Just remeber, calories in, calories out. Cut out the junk food-"
She rolled over in her chair and wiped a bit of chocolate from the corner of his mouth.
"No more of these, huh?" She continued, holding up the napkin to him, "and increase your cardio. Come see me in a couple of weeks and I'm sure it will all have melted off."
"Of course, more cardio," Isaac echoed her as he stood up. She looked over his slightly expanded form.
"I know finals are coming up, and the temptation to indulge will be strong, but you have to fight it. This freshman 15 could turn into twenty or more if you aren't careful. If you keep this up, with your fat distribution, you could end up...what to the kids call it now, thick?"
Isaac's cheeks went red. Was that a comment on his backside? His hands went there instinctively.
"I'll see you in a couple of weeks. Be good now!" indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
