When her mother said that her clothes should be dry it sounded like music to Rebecca’s ears. Although she was still at home it felt extremely awkward for her to be naked in the kitchen with her fully-clothed sister and mother there. She couldn’t wait to grab the clothes from her mother once she brought them back up so that she could finally get dressed, but once her mother reached the bottom of the basement stairs a funny thing happened: the power went out.
Because it was early in the morning the room was still well-lit thanks to the sunlight coming in through the windows, and Rebecca was more annoyed at the timing of the power outage than anything. She tiptoed to the door leading to the basement, being careful to retain what little modesty she could by keeping covered with her hands and called down to her mother, “Do you need any help down there?”
Her mother replied, “No, I’m okay, but the dryer door is locked and won’t open until the power comes back on. Go check the circuit breaker and see if it tripped.”
Rebecca’s face immediately turned red. The circuit breaker was outside and even worse it was at the far end of the house on the side. Their yard had a fence but it was only the chain metal and offered no privacy. She could easily be spotted by a neighbor, someone walking down the street or from across the street. She must be joking Rebecca thought to herself.
“Like this?” Rebecca asked nervously. “Why can’t Caitlin go and check it?”
“Because Caitlin is responsible and did her own laundry,” her mother shot back from the darkness at the bottom of the stairs. “Now you can suck it up and go check it now or you can hope that the breaker didn’t trip and that the power comes back on its own.”
Rebecca heard Caitlin snicker and shot her a dirty glare which quickly quieted her younger sister. She couldn’t believe that her mother was being this adamant about teaching her a lesson. She thought for sure that making her go into the kitchen naked was punishment enough but obviously her mother disagreed, and she was now stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place. Does she remain naked in the house and hope that the power returns quickly on its own, or does she risk going outside to check the circuit breaker?
