The echoing sound of the wailing alarm was quite jarring, more than enough to cause Ami to set her book down, reluctantly mark a page, and close it.
She watched the students in the room exchange perplexed looks, then slowly file out of the classroom.
Was it a drill? It didn't seem likely. Those were very rare, and usually scheduled well in advance. Ami looked outside the window. No smoke or signs of any alarm.
Still, better safe than sorry. She left her satchel lying on the desk and rose to her feet, slowly heading to peer out into the hallway.
Most of the students seemed to have already left the rooms and headed downstairs. Common protocol, really.
Ami could, of course, follow their lead... or she could just stay in the classroom and relax with her book until everyone came back.
She didn't think there was any cause for panic.
