Chapter #4

Get adopted by "Candy"

Amanda cursed herself for not planning ahead. She was now stuck as a real dog. A real bloodhound. When she still had shapeshifting powers, she could have kept her ability to talk. But she was always looking for adventures and knew it would be more exciting to experience the real thing. That’s why she never gave herself the power of speech when becoming a dog. However, the ability to talk would have come in handy now. Kyle had no idea Amanda was now a bloodhound and would be looking for a different breed. Amanda figured if she could get home, she would easily be able to convince him it was her because of the custom collar Kyle insisted she wear during dog outings. All she had to do was get there without being caught or being distracted.

Her thoughts were interrupted as she caught movement out of the corner of her eyes. She smiled knowing this was one of the reasons she liked becoming a dog to enjoy animal instincts, “Squirrel!” She thought as her ears perked up and barked loudly while chasing a squirrel towards a tree. She eagerly chased the squirrel knowing that Kyle would usually tug on her leash and not let her go after such rodents when she was a dog. It was nice to feel free and be able to chase after squirrels!

Moments later, she was at the bottom of the tree barking up at the squirrel. She tried pawing and jumping up but it was no use. She then snapped out of it realizing she was causing a scene. It was dark out and she was barking loudly. She tried to stay on track and continue home. She couldn’t help herself from marking the tree in case she wanted to chase after the squirrel again later. With her keen sense of smell, she’d be able to pick out her urine scent from far away. She crouched her hind legs down to pee like a dog. However, something felt different.

She’d peed as ‘Bella’ plenty of times but for some reason things seemed off. She momentarily thought it was because she was a bloodhound now. She thought maybe being a slightly taller breed of dog had something to do with it. Just to make sure, she arched her neck down to check out her anatomy. Her ears perked up at what she saw, “Whoa! That’s certainly new! I guess I’m a boy-dog now!” Amanda recalled earlier when she used her shapeshifting powers to become a bloodhound. She imagined the body of the most recent bloodhound she’d seen. It was from the dog park that Kyle had taken her to. Amanda hadn’t realized she absentmindedly also changed her sex during the morph. Instead of squatting, she lifted her hind leg and peed on the tree. She giggled to herself, “That was much easier!

Amanda took a few steps away from the tree and was now well-aware of the extra bodyparts dangling down. Her canine adrenaline was running crazy for the past hour so she hadn’t taken the time to notice. That’s when something inside Amanda’s body suddenly made her frightened. Her canine instincts told her something scary was about to happen. Just then, she heard thunder in sky and saw a lightning bolt snap loudly. Simultaneously, it started to pour rain. Amanda quivered at how scary the storm seemed. She had never been a dog before during a storm and was starting to understand why they got so scared.

She was still in their neighbor Tiffany’s (…everybody calls me Candy) backyard. Amanda and Kyle’s house was just across the street. She could tell Kyle’s car was gone and there were no lights on except the front porch. Amanda could see Bella’s shiny dog bowl on the front porch. Amanda’s human heart melted at the nice gesture. Kyle had set food out in case she came home. Amanda was starving and couldn’t wait to eat. However, another lightning bolt hit nearby and Amanda started howling in fear. She let out barks and jumped under a pile of wood using her paws to cover her face. She started whimpering in fear. She thought to herself, “Come on Amanda! Pull yourself together! Just tough up and run across the street!” She peeked out of her paws and now her house seemed forever away. Even if she got there, she’d still be stuck out in the storm because Kyle wasn’t home yet.

Tiffany’s side door opened and she was holding a dog treat, “It’s okay! Come here!” Amanda peeked up again and saw Tiffany was offering to take her in. She must have heard her barking at the squirrel and her howls at the storm. Amanda knew it was more appeasing to take a few steps into her house than running all the way across the street to an empty home in the scary storm. Amanda’s human brain kicked in as she considering another advantage to be inside the neighborhood flirt’s house. She’d finally be able to witness what she does with the husbands when they come over to help her. She knew Kyle was looking for her and would come knocking on doors to ask if they’d seen ‘Bella.’ Amanda could then eavesdrop on their interaction to find out what Kyle does at Candy’s house. Afterwards, she could signal Kyle to let him know it was really her. This would require removing the dog collar with their address on it first. The only way her spying would work is if Kyle didn’t know it was her. Plus, Amanda knew ‘Candy’ liked dogs and would probably have some food too. Dog food seemed much more appetizing than trying to hunt for something in the wild. Even though Amanda loved turning into a dog, she just liked pretending to be a pet. She didn’t want to have to what a real dog did and actually hunt for a meal. Even more, she didn’t want to spend the night outside during a cold rainy storm.

Candy offered again, “Come on puppy! Don’t be scared! It’s okay! Come inside!” Amanda then noticed she was holding a dog treat. She started drooling at the scent and wagging her tail. She finally decided to go inside. Before crawling out from under the wood pile, Amanda used her paws to carefully push the collar off. Luckily her fur was wet and she maneuvered it off. She safely left it hidden underneath a log. She then crawled out and eagerly wagged her tail running into Candy’s house. Even though she despised the woman, for the time being she was a savior. Now Amanda would get some food and be safely inside a shelter.
