Paula took the opportunity to hold Joe’s lamp saying, “I wish I could go back to before this conversation started because I don’t think we are getting anywhere with it.” With that Joe’s magical abilities took hold and granted Paula’s wish. A swirl of colorful smoke whisked Paula through the previous minutes and beyond. Paula woke in her own bed shaken and left wondering at just what happened. The lamp still in her grip she sat up checking her phone added to her confusion finding it to be the morning of the party she was just at.

Staring at the lamp she tried working out conflicting ideas of a magic lamp where and when she awoke and what she understood to be possible. Had it all been a dream? She built up her courage to test out the lamp with another wish. Another wish in the privacy of her room, “I wish that my all of my clothes were clean and put away.” Joe felt a tingle run through him as he channeled the magic to grant Paula’s wish. He remember her previous wish which happened in the future feeling surreal. He teleported himself to his lamp hoping to talk sense into Paula.

Paula watched in amazement as something out of Disney’s fantasia happened before her. A stream of water and detergent ran through her clothes that wrung themselves out after being washed. They then climbed up pulling open drawers and her closet to hang themselves up and put themselves away, clean and dry. Water dissipating in a fog bank that rolled out underneath her door. With the show in her room ending Joe popped into her room startling her into screaming.

“I am sorry I didn’t mean to startle you. It is me Joe from the party. Do you remember me?” Joe asked.

Covering herself with her blanket, “Sorry about the scream but I am not used to men appearing out of thin air. I do remember you. I am at a loss of words for all that I have seen. I am now the possessor of a magical lamp that can grant me my every desire. Can you explain this to me?’

“I am a genie. I know that you are opened to a world of wondrous possibilities with my lamp but I caution you. With a wish innumerable granting prospects are set in motion. I only have a flimsy bit of control on the outcome. This evening with a wish to end our conversation you were sent back to this morning. Your ill worded wish could have laid you in the distant past or your own childhood. What if it placed in your baby self, you couldn’t verbalize a wish. Take care if you must wish but I urge you to give over my lamp for your own protection.” Joe attempted to convince Paula.

Paula felt his weighty words but her own desires to powerful to be swayed she wished, “I hear what you are saying but I can’t pass up this opportunity. I wish to be a wealthy heiress.”

Her words evoked magical powers that swirled about her room pushing out its walls as the environment around them altered. No more store bought furniture as it transformed into handcrafted hard woods. Her bed widened into a king sized bed the very linens on her bed softened into smooth silk sheets. Memories of a life of wealth and opulence filled Paula’s head. She smiled with the recollections but then she found her interactions with people different. Spoiled as a child and everyone acting to her bidding she developed a mean streak. Hurting people with words or deeds. Having people fired for simple offenses. Gossiping and spreading vile rumors of those who incurred her wrath. She came to hate herself. “What sort of person am I now?”

“I warned you but I take no joy in it.” Joe saw what the wish wrought. “You are yourself now. I would recommend making amends to those wronged through your own powers not mine.”
