East

"You do know we don't know where we are headed, right?" Laura tugged at Steven's hand, "We can't see the sun, we don't know where north, east, west or south is."

"I am thankful for the fact that at least we are still walking. At this rate, we will get somewhere."

Laura sighed as she looked up at the canopy of the trees that shaded them, hid them away from the outside of the world. Just then, an idea clicked in her mind.

"Steven?"

"Yeah? Is something wrong? Are you hurt?" Steven looking, his eyes full of concern, as he searched Laura for any kind of physical injury.

"No, no, it's sweet of you to be worried but I am fine. I just got an idea. You learnt how to read the directions using sun, am I right?"

"Yes, you are right. I don't understand what you have in mind."

"You need to climb a tree."

"What?"

"If you climb a tree, you can see the sun and where will the forest end. We can get out of here quickly, we will know where we are headed."

"Good thinking Laura. But to climb up that tall tree. . . "

"I thought someone had a good training in childhood. Now might be a really, really, good time to show off, Steven."

"Okay then, I will go, climb up the tree. Don't move from here or go anywhere else. I will be above you, just yell my name if you see something or if there is anything at all."

"Will do," Laura smiled, not giving much thought about Steven's warning. He was worried for her, leaving her alone down while he climbed was difficult. He couldn't possibly get down to her if she yelled. What was he going to do? She had a good reason, this could be our only chance to get somewhere safe before dark.

"Okay, here we go," Steven sighed, preparing himself.

He put his steps carefully as he climbed up, not looking back. After climbing to the top of the tree, the leaves rustled as he exited the layer of canopy into the open sky. The scene was breathtaking, the sun was right in front of him, he could see the horizon. His eyes landed where the last tree was. He could see smoke coming from near their position.

"It might be a good place to stay for the night, safe and nice." He thought to himself.

"Hey Laura?!" He looked down, trying to see Laura but he couldn't see anything due to the mingled network of leaves and trunks.

"Laura!" He yelled her name again.
