Chapter #4

A child runs in to the forest early in the morn...

Josette, youngest of five children, has awakened just before dawn as she hears something she's never heard before behind their small home. It's a strange, strangled cry she's sure it's something in need of help yet knows no one has gone into the forest and ever returned. But she can't seem to resist the pull of the cry she hears.

She quietly sneaks out of her bed, dresses and leaves the house. The air outside is chilled and still dark. Josette traces her hand along the house as she moves towards the back where she hears the sounds coming. By the time she reaches the back of the house the sun is beginning to make the chill air look like fairy dust as it begins to rise and she realizes the strangled cry is definitely coming from inside the forest. She looks back at her house and then at the forest before walking towards and into the dreaded forest.

The early morning sunrise doesn't seem to reach inside the forest. All is dark and quiet except for the strange cry Josette is following. She wonders what she'll find when she finds it and if it will be the last thing she ever sees.
