Under the cover of darkness, the former king left the city with nothing but a small pack slung over his shoulder, a set of simple but sturdy clothes on his back, and a long knife secured to his belt. No one looking at him would have recognized him as the King of only days ago, whom the people usually saw in the blinding guise of royal finery.
He felt only moderately hesitant to leave Keravin in charge of the kingdom. Though the man was largely considered an inept fool, there was a sincerity to him that would serve the kingdom well in the days to come.
At least until I come back, the former king thought. If I come back.
He kept to the back roads throughout the night, stopping in the predawn hours for a few hours' sleep before he would have to take his new guise to the public thoroughfares. At least, that was the plan. His mind had other concerns.
Like whether he had prepared Keravin enough for challenges ahead. I did as much for him as I could, and he has my most loyal advisors to help him find his way.
What about this quest of yours? There's no way this will end well! I know the dangers. Even if I die before the end, there will be others to finish what I started.
And what if all your efforts fail? I will succeed! I must, for the sake of my kingdom.
Yeah, I bet they'll completely understand you making that imbecile their king, since it's "for the sake of the kingdom." Since they could only have the opportunity to question my decision if I succeed in this quest and return, that point is irrelevant. Now shut up and let me sleep!
This back and forth went on for quite some time before the voices of doubt were finally silenced and the former king was able to rest.
A few short hours later, he woke up and continued on his way after a quick breakfast. It wasn't long before he reached the main road out of his capitol city. He couple just barely make out the grey towers of the castle in the distance.
He turned his back to his longtime home and began the long leg of his journey toward the distance mountains in the east, where the fate of his people was waiting to be decided.
