Steven tried to look in her eyes, but Laura didn’t allow it to happen. She didn’t want to go weak at this point of the time. It was decision time after all. She took a deep breath, looked towards Steven with a corner of her eye and walked away alone, despite the plaintive cries of Steven. Of course she cried but she did what had to be done for the good of all. She was built this way – unselfish, unflinching and uncompromising.
The grey mist seemed to turn a darker shade of grey and a white blanket was descending upon the forest now. Steven, who stood their transfixed until now, was still trying to decide as images of his children flashed by in his mind’s eye. The children had been his strength for long and today, they were his source of weakness. He closed his eyes as he tried to counter the emotional swirl going on his mind but all he could do was to let streams of tear go trickling down his cheek.
“Why, God? Haven’t you done enough?” he roared into the mist and turned back to go back to his children. Just then, he heard a guttural sound coming from afar followed by a cry for help – Laura’s cry for help.
“Laura,” was all what he could yell. He stuttered as he tried to run, as if is legs had turned jelly. Gathering himself somehow, he ran like a maniac in the approximate direction in which Laura had gone. He kept on running like a wild fire in the forest for the next few minutes which felt like decades to him but all he could see was the grey mist and the images of Laura in extreme danger. He kept shrieking her name hoping for anything in return. But all he got was...
