For many days, Sabrina had the same dream, she would be standing in a dark place in front of a stone chimney. In the early morning hours, the sun would slowly awaken the life in the forest. As the sun made it’s slow arc across the sky, the rays would pierce the denseness of the woods and strike the face of the chimney and burn geometric shapes into the stone surfaces.
As Sabrina turned her face to the sun, she would be wide awake standing in the gardens of her home staring at the forest. It was time. The whispers of the forest would lead her to the hallowed ground. Sabrina breathed in the dank and heady scents of the forest. She honed her senses to the musty scents of the untamed, and listened carefully for the soft rustle of the forest creatures who were either her guide or her enemy.
The fox with the golden eyes blocked her path. She allowed the fox to circle her and take in her scent. The sly one pranced to a point several steps in front of Sabrina, stretched the forward paw in front and the other bent as if to bow his loyalty to Sabrina.
“Thank you, faithful one. I command you to lead me to the hallowed ground.”
“It is my honor to obey.” The fox wheeled and darted into the center of the forest. Sabrina labored to keep up. The rivulets of perspiration soon saturated her garment, causing her tunic to cling to her body slow her footsteps.
The fox leaped as high as he could, catching the shelving of the stone wall and using it to launch himself over the stones. Sabrina ran to the other side, but the fox had disappeared. She collapsed against the coolness of the boulders, resisting the desire to allow fatigue and sleep to overtake her. She whispered into the darkness that surrounded her, “Keeper of the Hallowed Ground, I am here to claim the powers that are to be entrusted to me.”
The moonlight took that moment to brighten to reveal the enchantment of this place. The smallest of creatures one by one presented their gifts to Seer Sabrina. As each paw touched the hem of her tunic, her strength, knowledge and joy increased.
Morning broke, allowing the jeweled pattern of the chimney surface to reveal itself. Sabrina recognized the pattern. During the night, Sabrina was aware that the wolf of her youth had been circling. She could feel it’s hot breath near her neck. “Wolf, bow to your master!”
“Never!”
“Cease!”
While the wolf remained frozen in mid-attack, Sabrina, pressed the jeweled stones in the order presented in her dreams.
