This choice: You go straight to your boss, Kim • Go Back...
Chapter #5
You go straight to your boss, Kim
by: Unknown
Not wanting to surrender control of the situation you decide to bring this matter directly to Kim. She'll probably be disappointed in you for failing to lock your workstation but you have an exemplary record at the company and you doubt she'd fire you for your first offense. Six months from now this will be a thing of the past. You don't even turn to look at Denise, instead you quickly lock your computer and walk straight to Kim's office. Just as you open the door Denise rushes in past you with a piece of paper in her hand. Your jaw drops as the door slams fractions of an inch from your nose and you hear the click of the lock.
For a moment you consider grabbing the door but realize that would just leave you looking foolish. Instead you straighten your tie, turn around, and walk back to your desk. You begin the process of returning to your work but you can't focus, the thought of what's being said in that office is killing you. And what is on that piece of paper? Surely she printed out the email to show Kim. You're done!
What feels like ten years was probably only ten minutes but your heart jumps into your throat when you see Kim's door open and your boss step out of it. "Robert, my office." She says sternly. Sheepishly you weave through the desks while the whole office looks at you quizzically.
You enter the office and close the door behind you. You notice Denise sitting there with a smug look on her face, not wanting to appear too forward you remain standing as Kim appears to be re-reading the email. Finally after what feels like an eternity she looks up at you.
"I'm disappointed in you Robert. Things like this are why I replaced most of the males with female employees when I came on. We can't have so many people running around thinking with the wrong head."
You remain silent, taking your dressing down like a man while Denise practically radiates next to you.
"This is very serious, thankfully Denise hasn't pushed this to HR yet. She said she'd prefer to handle it in house. For that I'm grateful, I don't need my bosses asking why my employees think this is appropriate behavior. I think you owe her a word of thanks for that kindness."
"Look, Kim...I know how bad this looks but I didn't send that email. I went to the bathroom and forgot to lock my computer. I've never done it before and I'll never do it again. But Denise sent that to herself to make me look bad!"
"Oh for fucks sake Robert! Listen to yourself! That sounds ridiculous! Who in their right mind would do something like that? You're digging a deeper hole for yourself here."
You stand there in stunned silence. It did sound ridiculous when you actually verbalized it. No matter how true it was.
"To think you were the front runner for the supervisor spot. You haven't left me with many options here."
"Just don't fire me, look I can make this right!" You don't like the begging tone in your voice but now is not the time for your ego to get in the way.
"I don't think I'm going to fire you. I'm going to give you two options."
"Oh thank you Kim!"
Denise giggles slightly at how pathetic you sound but Kim either didn't hear it or chose to ignore it.
"Denise is getting the supervisor spot."
"Yes!" Denise exclaimed.
"But she's also going to continue working some clients, namely your highest grossing ones. You will keep a skeleton load of clients, take a 20% pay cut, and work directly under Denise as her personal assistant. If after six months Denise feels like you have performed well and you deserve it, you'll regain your old position and pay but Denise will obviously still be your boss. If she gives you a negative review I will fire you personally."
You stand in stunned silence. Denise isn't even bothering to hide the unbridled joy on her face anymore.
"Option two, you keep your same pay and client list but you will work an additional two hours after shift. You will report directly to Helena, our head custodian. If after three months she gives you a positive review you will cease your janitorial duties. Again, if she gives you a negative review you will be fired."
Your mind is spinning...either way you'll be reporting directly to someone who despises you and who will do everything they can to humiliate you. And you'll have to do it or you'll be out of a job!
