Dakota moves to a new town, where she finds herself and her friends getting bigger...

This choice: Oh shit, it's mob money.  •  Go Back...
Chapter #5

Muddy Money

    by: Unknown
"Oh shit."

Dakota froze, her heartbeat thumping in her ears. Her brain was buzzing, her thoughts jumbled. She felt like she should run, but she couldn't move her legs. She wanted nothing more than to just walk back out of the shipping container as if nothing had ever happened. Before anybody noticed...

"Dakota? Hey! Yo! What are you doing in there?" The dim light in the container grew dimmer still as a figure appeared at the entrance. When Dakota didn't answer, Zack stepped forward. "What are you - oh shit!"

The boy recoiled, as if under threat. "Holy - oh my God! Jesus!"

"Guys? What's going on down there?" Piper, realizing she was no longer the center of attention, called from her lofty perch. "Guys?"

There was a few seconds of grunting, she managed to get herself down from the crates. "Hey! Where'd you go?"

Zack snapped to, blinking. "In here! Holy shit, You gotta see this!"

Piper appeared in the doorway, flipping her hair behind her ears. "What the hell, guys! I could have, like, broken a leg or something. What are you even whooooooly fucking shit!"

The three pals stood there for a moment more, drinking in the sight. The box's top was halfway off, leaning casually against the wooden frame and reveling that the box was in fact filled to the top with wads and wads of crisp green bills. Dollar bills. Hundred dollar bills.

"Oh my god," stammered Piper, recovering much more quickly than her two friends. "Holy Christ of a mother-fucking tricycle! Jesus, look at that cash!" She advanced cautiously, clutching handfuls of her own hair as though she would rip it out. Kneeling down over the box, she hovered her hands over the money, as if a single touch would shatter the illusion. "Look at it! It's just filling the whole box! There's gotta be like..." she shook her head, her powers of estimation failing her in this time of great need. "Like... infinite money!"

Zack suddenly shook his head. "Alright, alright, no. No no no. No." He backed away from the box as if it were some dangerous animal. "Piper, put the lid back on that thing. We have to get out of here."

"What? Are you fucking nuts?" Piper spat. "Dude, you don't just put a lid on infinite money!"

"Uh, yea, you do! Because you don't just find infinite money, either!" He shook his head.

"Piper, come on... this is somebody's money..." Dakota said weakly, her voice squeaking nervously.

"Somebody who would miss it very very much," chimed Zack.

Piper gazed longingly at the box, but eventually consented. "Jesus, fine! Just... God!" She bit her lip, gazing back at the box. Zack grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her begrudgingly out of the shipping container.

"I can't believe that just happened. I can't believe that just happened."

Dakota stared down at her burger/fries combo, feeling numb as the adrenaline slowly worked it's way out of her system. She wasn't hungry at all - if anything, she felt kind of sick to her stomach. Across from her, Zack was much the same, his head resting solemnly in his hands, food untouched.

Piper, on the other hand...

"God. I wonder why it was there? I mean, who just leaves big boxes of cash lying around?" She shoved the rest of her bacon cheeseburger roughly into her mouth, washing it down with a hearty swig of milkshake. "Mm - I mean, it wasn't even locked!"

"Could you not shout?" Zack snapped, rubbing his temples. "This doesn't leave this table, understand? None of us can tell anybody - not our parents, no friends, nothing. Capiche?"

Dakota nodded nervously. Piper rolled her eyes. "Whatever. Capiche." She blinked, catching the hostile glances from her two friends. "What? Come on, guys! You're acting like we saw a ghost or something. Just chill! You guys are acting more suspicious than me. You going to eat your fries?"

Dakota shook her head, and Piper swapped trays with her. "We can all just agree that this never happened, alright? But you guys are going to have to eat something." She shoved a fry into Dakota's unsuspecting mouth. "People are giving me looks."

It was at least a week before Dakota heard anything from Zack or Piper. It was a kind of mutual thing, she figured - they all needed time to cool off, to return to normal after... whatever that was. It certainly wasn't anything out of the ordinary for Dakota to spend a week slouching around the house, though her mother did note that she was being even quieter than usual. However, Dakota was finally beginning to get over the whole ordeal when she got a call from Piper.

"Hey, Dakota! Did ya hear? ..."
