Chapter #5

Piper Peacocks with her Ring

by: Bobo the Hobo Author IconMail Icon
“Wow, you actually bought something in that dump?”

Zack had spent his time outside, in the fresh non-flaky air, rather wisely. The blonde looked to have rather enjoyed his time away from Abida’s Eclectics even; it was clear that his current corndog had only been his most recent. Three long sticks with burnt batter along the middle sat in a little pile to his left as he suckled on a fourth dog. Dakota wasn’t sure that they had been gone long enough to warrant Zack being on his fourth corndog but hey, that was Zack.

“It’s not a dump!” Piper said rather defensively, twisting the ring along her finger, “That place was cool.”

“It was… kind of a dump, P.” Dakota winced in apology as she held up her own dog, slathered in mustard, “I mean, in the figurative sense. If all that stuff had been laying around instead of in a building, it would have been a literal dumping ground for old junk.”

“So basically, the only thing keeping that place from becoming a landfill is that it’s indoors.” Zack quipped, his left cheek swollen with meat batter and condiments, “And that it’s, y’know, next to the pier.”

“Whatever.” Piper rolled her eyes and turned her attention toward her corndog, “Gawd, last time I try to culture you assholes.”

It wasn’t really that big of a deal; at least not to Dakota. So Piper liked antiquing—big deal! She didn’t have to get so defensive about it. The only real issue Dakota had with Piper’s sudden interest in that place was that she was so willing to let herself get ripped off. Abida’s Eclectics wasn’t nearly the treasure trove that Piper seemed to wish that it was, and she had some serious doubts that the jewelry set that Piper had bought her ring from really belonged to some old-timey bluebloods who may or may not have been the “backbone” of Daven’s Port—or even existed for that matter. But whatever made Piper happy made Piper happy, she supposed.

“Whoops!” Piper said suddenly, putting down her corndog and picking it up with her left hand, “Almost forgot—don’t wanna get mustard on my new rock.”

Dakota and Zack both felt their faces drop in poor humor as Piper actually started to eat the corndog with her left hand. Dakota had expected as much, but Zack had bailed out of that dust magnet long before Piper had become so suddenly enamored with her jewelry.

“Oh my god, seriously Piper?” Zack said with a little laugh

What? I don’t wanna get mustard on my ring!” Piper said defensively, “It’s pretty!”

“It’s just a ring Piper—you paid, like, $10 for it.” Dakota said reassuringly, “I’m pretty sure that if it got a little mustard on it, it wouldn’t be the end of the world.”

Piper had already taken a big bite of her corndog, but Dakota was sure that if her mouth were empty, her jaw would have dropped out of shock. Her dark eyes widened in surprise at Dakota’s blasphemous (though not impractical!) observation, and her chewing picked up the pace so that she might finish her mouthful more quickly and begin her rebuttal.

“Dee, were you even listening to Abida?” Piper said rather excitedly, “This ring—that whole set are Rosewater Family heirlooms. This ring is, like, history or something! Plus, y’know, I never get to really have nice shit like this.”

“Alright, alright, eat with whatever hand you want.” Dakota relented

Piper looked satisfied with that; she easily went back to eating her corndog (with her left hand) and that seemed to be the end of it. But it still struck Dakota as odd—and made her a little angry even—that Piper was buying into this whole Priceless Family Heirloom thing. Ever since Dakota had moved to Daven’s Port, Piper had always been the more street-smart of her slowly developing crew. To see her eating so eagerly out of some old probably-not-a-real-gypsy’s hand made Dakota more than a little frustrated.

But again, Piper was happy; and that would have to be enough, she supposed…
