With no further evidence to hand April followed her gut feeling. And unfortunately it told her that she would find Texas in the abandoned ghost town. She gulped, shaking off the pangs of fear that place gave her. Maybe if she was fast she could stop the sheriff from ending up in Molly's ratty paws. Soon the familiar boggy smell of swampland filled her nose. This place used to be a bustling little town called Silver Lakes. But one day a nearby river flooded the whole town, turning the surrounding lands into a soggy mire. For reasons unknown however, the waters never really receded and the town was abandoned shortly after. Most of the buildings in Silver Lake have now sunken into the ground, some nearly vanishing completely.
The swamp surrounding Silver Lakes had begun to grow it's own ecosystem, plantlife teeming wildly in the muddy ground. It was a strangely green patch in the middle of the unforgiving desert. Mosquitos started to plague April as she ventured closer to the town itself. Not a hint of activity could be seen amidst the sunken buildings, but the deputy knew this place was not abandoned. She felt like something had been watching her ever since she entered the narrow road through the swamp. Suddenly her eyes widened as she spotted a familiar figure just outside of town.
"What the... Roxxie?" The deputy said, squinting her eyes. The roo bandit was laid out against a small tree, covered in cuts and bruises, her right eye swollen and blackened. April didn't need to guess to understand what had happened here. Molly had betrayed her partner in crime and taken Texas. But once she got close the roo gasped and shook awake.
"Stop, you loon. You wanna end up like me?"
The fox had no time for the bandit's antics and got off her horse, grabbing a length of rope from the saddle. As she got closer to Roxxie the bandit's one functioning eye widened with fear.
"What are you doing?" She stammered.
"Makin' sure you don't go anywhere. Roxxie Roo, you're under arrest." She said with no small amount of satisfaction in her words.
"Whatever, beats dying out here." The roo replied, surprising the deputy. April had expected more swearing, shouting and fighting. But the bandit was in a pretty dire state. Whilst she got to work tying the bruised villain up Roxxie continued muttering to herself.
"I don't get it. We had a deal. I'd bring that damn weasel over here and that fucking voodoo rat would make sure she never leaves. But then I show up as promised and she has her minions beat me up and steal Texas from me. Ow!" She yelps as April pulls her bindings tight. Molly might have a burning hatred for the weasel, but she was too scatterbrained to stick with any of her fiendish plans for more than a day. The deputy finishes her handiwork, leaving the roo tied to the tree and walking off into town.
"What the hell are you doing?" Roxxie yelled.
"Gettin' Texas back." April replied without looking back.
"What? Don't tie me to a tree and then commit suicide you maniac! You wanna take on Molly on her home turf? Did you breathe too much swamp gas or are you deputies just naturally insane?! She's got more henchmen than you have bullets!" April gulped. She knew Roxxie was exaggerating, but there was some truth to her words. She was about to take on a whole bandit lair full of enemies by herself. But Texas would do the same for her. No time for cold feet now. She ignored the kangaroo's ravings and walked into town.
