Maybe patience wasn't something Undyne was especially good about.
And maybe it wasn't such a good thing that her lack of patience was leading to a desire to grab the nearest heavy object in the cluttered lab around her and suplex it into the floor just for fun.
At least she only wanted to do it. As long as she restrained herself, things would be fine.
"We're just about ready, Undyne!" came the frazzled-sounding voice of Alphys, the former Royal Scientist, -- and Undyne's steady girlfriend -- who seemed to be able to tell when Undyne was feeling impatient.
Undyne herself, still sitting on the edge of a vacant desk, was idly flipping a lightning-blue glowing spear in her grip. She gave a combination growl-sigh.
"Gotcha, Alphys." she said. She'd been told something to the tune of "almost ready" about five or six times now.
It was a slow day for the former captain of the Underground's Royal Guard. A year and a half had now passed since the destruction of the Barrier and the exodus of the monsters from their age-old prison. Things were going very well for them by now. The monsters -- even the strangest-looking of the bunch -- had managed to integrate into human society over time, and progress was booming for both the humans and their new neighbors. With both human science and the incredible work of magic-infused monster science working together, both species were achieving things formerly thought impossible.
Yet the impossible becoming possible did little to improve on Undyne's ability to wait quietly.
"Alphyyyyys..." she grumbled, her summoned magic spear dissipating as the fish-like monster dropped her fist to her side.
The upper half of her girlfriend's face appeared from behind an impressive stack of papers to respond. "Sorry, sorry... I think I've got it now."
Alphys stepped out into view, clutching a small device -- looking to be built from a cell phone -- in her clawed hands.
"Ready? For real?" Undyne asked, cracking a sharp-toothed grin.
Her girlfriend nodded. "The calculations were the hardest part, but I think it's ready now."
The lizard monster switched on the device in her hands, which let off a buzzing sound as it powered up.
"Just... just summon one of your spears, OK...?" Alphys said distractedly, fiddling with the device. She managed to kill the buzzing sound, and looked back up toward Undyne, who had already brought another of her glowing spears into existence.
"Just like this, right? You said it'll make the spear huge?"
"Th-that's right." Alphys said. She coughed, readying the device. "Just hold it still, and the machine should be able to lock onto it just fine."
Undyne obeyed, swinging the spear around to her front.
"This is gonna be so kickass..." she said, still grinning widely. "Even better than our giant sword!"
"Y-yes..." Alphys agreed. She looked and sounded nervous, but Undyne trusted her work. "OK, ready? Three, two, one..."
The device let off a whoop of sound, and a beam of light, looking just like a bullet of magic, shot off toward Undyne's spear.
"W-whoa-!!" Undyne exclaimed. Her spear was emanating a more and more powerful glow as the seconds passed. "This is so freakin' cool!"
"J-just a few more seconds, Undyne!" Alphys said, trying to be heard over the sounds of the machine.
"What...?" Undyne shouted back, unable to hear her voice.
She saw Alphys' mouth move again, but still heard nothing. She frowned, her grip on her spear slackening. Was there something else she needed to do...?
"W-wait-!!" Alphys yelped, watching as the glowing spear slipped downward in Undyne's grip. "D-don't move it so much-!!"
"Damn it, I still can't hear you!" she heard Undyne shout back.
"Oh no..." Alphys muttered, watching the energy readout on the small screen of her device. A warning flashed up on the screen a moment later, and she gave a squeak of panic.
Without further warning, the device roared with noise, and a blinding flash of light burst forth from its emitter. Alphys was blinded, stumbling back as she dropped the device.
A cacophony of other sounds roared into her ears, and she clamped her hands over them to block it out.
"Nngh... Crap..."
Undyne clutched at her forehead, which was stinging dully. She blinked a few times, trying to shake off the last of the blinding light.
She'd fallen down at some point, and was sitting on an uncomfortable mess of some kind. Maybe she'd been knocked backward...
It wouldn't look very cool, that was for sure.
She was about to get to her feet when her vision cleared properly and she froze.
