It wasn't long before you worked up the nerve to apply for a job at Gerbert's. It was fortunate that they were hiring. They were often hiring, in retrospect the constant turnover should have been your first warning. But, buckling down your enthusiasm to not appear over eager, you sailed through the application process without raising any flags. Your credentials and skill set was downplayed for Gerbert's. Things you were very good at, even if it would pertain to the restaurant directly, you omitted from your first set of references.
Your only goal was to get employed. And employed you got, since anyone with a pulse could be employed by that point.
The job was grueling, they had no real place to assign you when you first started out. That was fine. You got to learn about Gerbert's as someone from the inside, during grueling work such as cleaning, moving and retrieving files. Grunt work. You maintained pleasantries with everyone else on staff. Some attracted your attention immediately. Others earned your scorn, marked on an internal list.
Ultimately your true job at Gerbert's was unimportant. You weren't thinking about occupation. You were thinking about fulfillment. Of starting to grow in confidence and meaning, staking your claim to the restaurant by finding that niche that was yours and yours alone.
"I need you to stay later today," your boss would say. Everyone else would complain. Everyone would agree that you were never bothered about picking up extra work or shifts.
"Alright," you'd say. Almost a catchphrase of yours, letting others direct and restraining yourself until prompted. All the extra time let you set your schemes in motion. Just the right help at the right time, meeting a problem before anyone knew there was an issue. Occasionally you'd surprise your coworkers. Soon they came to be reliant on your presence, however subconsciously.
Your 'duty' as it were was quite complex to define...
