Enrique felt that, if all he could do was ask his father about having one last birthday at Gerbert's, he would never get his father to say yes. So he needed help from family. Not immediate family, for if pressed their mother would side with their father on most disputes. But there was somebody who could help change his point of view.
So surreptitiously, on the way home from school Enrique made a beeline towards Gerbert Gerbil's as soon as the bell rang. He could squeeze in his appeal before he was expected to walk Mercedes home from her school. It was that sweet-spot of time before Gerbert's got busy with after school kids wanting to grab a snack and hit the arcade.
After entering the front door Enrique found the main office quickly. Much to the surprise of the supervisor inside.
"Enrique? Does your padre know you're here?"
Juanita Suarez was a senior manager at Gerbert Gerbil's, his mother's sister. The two were very different especially in regards to height. Juanita was short. Very short. She was no taller than some of the common child clientele at Gerbert's, although she had the body of a matured adult. Perhaps her perspective helped her with her job, along with her no-nonsense personality when it came to task setting much like her brother in law.
"No, he doesn't know," Enrique admitted, "but I wanted to ask you something."
Juanita crossed her arms over her chest, her sleeves a star spangled periwinkle befitting the manager's uniform. "I'm listening."
"Do you think you could convince padre to let me have my thirteenth birthday here?"
"Mi sobrino," Juanita looked mock aghast, "you know how convinced your padre is about this. He thinks you're too old already to be frequenting here."
"But you don't think so, right auntie?"
"I wouldn't care because you are family, Enrique. But I am not your parent, I don't know how you think I could convince him."
That was just Juanita talking as a responsible adult. Enrique knew he just needed to butter his aunt up to convince her to help him. "Please auntie, I'll never ask you for anything ever again!"
Juanita sighed. "There will be future times you ask favors, Enrique."
"Please, I swear I will never ask anything of you again," Enrique pleaded.
"Alright," Juanita shushed him. "I'm going to be busy with the afternoon here but I'll see what I can do."
