Chapter #3

the odd remote

    by: Morphology Author IconMail Icon
Sarah looked at the person who possessed the body of her boyfriend Peter. Looking at his dark eyes, she could see that the sparkle wasn’t there. “So…” The storekeeper looked down at his wares as he started to speak. “Have you decided which of these fine products you would like to take home tonight?” He waved his right hand over the different products that were still on display in front of them.

“Even though the beads would be great, I don’t want to have to watch my thoughts around other people.” She said out loud trying to make her decision. “And you won’t tell me anything else about them until I make a decision?” The storekeeper shook his head as he waited patiently for her to make a decision. Letting out a sigh, she looked back over at the odd looking remote. The box was well faded from the sun but showed odd geometric designs and shaper edges. But the odd thing was that it seemed to call out to her, she needed to see the item, she needed to take it home with her. It compelled her mysteriously. “I think I will take the remote.” She said without taking her eyes off of the remote.

Not seeing the storekeeper's face, she didn’t see that his smile was starting to grow. “Excellent choice.” He said as he started to put away all the other products. “Well, this remote has some special features. For example, you can swap parts and memories with other people or you can simply copy them and paste them.” He let out an old man groan as he started to stand back up, which seemed out of place coming from her young boyfriend’s mouth. “But I suggest you don’t do that since it will overwrite the current ones.”

Nodding her head, Sarah started to reach out for the remote and opened up the worn, sun-bleached box and started to open it, but found her box being pulled away from her grasp. “Huh, what?” She exclaimed as she looked back up at the gentleman behind the counter, who was holding the box.

“We can’t have you walking off with the merchandise without paying for it, now can we?” He said, chuckling. “Now let’s see here.” He stared blankly past Sarah. She tried to follow his gaze but couldn’t see anybody behind her. All of the sudden he started to speak again and caused Sarah to jump in fright. “I think we can say $382.49 for the remote, hmm?” Knowing that she didn’t seem to have that amount on her currently, she brought out her phone to check her balance on the banking app that she used. Sure enough, that was the exact amount that she had saved up for a deposit on an apartment to move in with her friends. “So I’m guessing that you will be using a card?” He said, chuckling as he held out his hand for her to give him her card. Taking it out of her hand, he brought it over to the reader to run it through. He knew that she had enough money to cover, in fact, he knew she had just the right amount.

Looking down at the reader, Sarah could see that it wasn’t connected to anything. No power cable and no cable to connect it to the internet. Nothing! Within a few seconds, the machine beeped and the salesman handed back her card. “But, it's not connected to anything.” She said pointing down to the device.

Looking down at where she was pointing, the salesman let out a boisterous laugh. “Yeah, we get that alot. I guess you can say that it's wireless technology.” He started to push the sun-faded worn box over to Sarah. Licking her lips in anticipation, she started to remove the lid of the box to examine the contents. As she lifted the top of the box, the insides of the box looked nothing like the outside. The remote itself seemed to be like a time lost relic of the past, no scuffs, dings, or chips could be found on the device at all. “You can find the instructions glued on the inside of the box too.” He pointed out the glue-bound manuscript on the inside of the box. “But if you want, I can give you a quick overview.” She nodded her head trying to digest everything.

The salesman pulled the box over to him and lifted the remote out of the box. Taking great care not to point it at anyone or anything, he started to point out the various features that the remote came with. “This Blarg Industries remote allows you to change people’s traits, whether they are swapped or copied and pasted.”

The Blue Button - allows for a simple body swap between two individuals. Just point and click with each individual.

The Red Button - allows you to swap traits. Just point and click the button while thinking about what you want to swap.

The Green Button - allows you to copy traits and paste them onto somebody else. Just like the Red Button, but any traits that are overwritten can’t be recovered. So use this button with great prejudice.

The Yellow Button - allows you to merge two individuals. This will only works for humans.

This switch on the side will allow the individual to be aware of the changes. But as a safety, all other individuals besides the remote holder will be unaware of any changes. Also, if you accidentally drop it, no changes will be made due to the user needing to click the button to make the swap.

Sarah held up her hand to stop him and she tried to digest the information. “So nobody will be able to see the changes if they aren’t involved in the swap if the switch is set correctly?” The man nodded his head. Hearing this she started to play out some interesting things in her head.
