Chapter #5

Real Miniature Golf

    by: Haro-Haze Author IconMail Icon
Mon-El was feeling quite pleased with himself. He'd managed to plan a date for his girlfriend Kara that she seemed excited about. It was an earthling sport called mini-golf. He was familiar with regular golf, which already has a very small ball, so he didn't know quite what to expect, but Kara was beaming.

"This is going to be so fun Mon-El! I've wanted to try playing here ever since I did a local news report on it opening up. Thank you for taking me!" Kara said.

"Of course Kara, I'm looking forward to it." Mon-El said. He walked up to the window and paid for two players, and was promptly handed a smaller than normal golf club but a regular sized golf ball. A few steps later and they were at "Hole 1", at least according to the sign.

"I'll be right back Mon-El. I'm going to go grab a snack." Kara said, before scurrying off towards the concessions stand.

Now alone, Mon-El placed his ball down on the designated spot before inspecting the club in his hand.

"Alright, now how does this silly Earth game work..." Mon-El muttered. He had to figure this out before Kara got back so she didn't think he was an idiot. He saw the hole he was aiming for on the other side of a small pond that had a little bridge crossing it.

He gave the ball what he thought was a gentle tap, but he underestimated his newfound Earth strength. The ball shot into the air, bounced off the rail of the bridge, and then landed in a bush on the other side of it.

"Ugh, glad Kara didn't see that." Mon-El muttered, heading after the ball. He stepped over the the tiny pond and then took another step towards the bush, when suddenly he felt himself getting woozy. Confused, he looked at the club in his hand, and his x-ray vision suddenly confirmed something he should have noticed earlier: it contained traces of lead. Still, lead had never affected him like this before. He fell to his knees, dropping the club out of his hand where it fell out of sight into the pond. The world blurred, and then all of a sudden, it wasn't blurry anymore. It was just BIG. The tiny bridge and pond now looked like a normal pedestrian bridge you might find on the National City waterfront.

"What the hell?!" Mon-El might not have known all the rules of mini-golf, but he was pretty sure this wasn't supposed to happen.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

The turf covered ground shook rhythmically as something big approached. Mon-El looked up to see that the source of the shaking was his now comparatively gigantic girlfriend, Kara. She had her club in one hand, and in the other she was holding a half eaten churro. Based on the smile on her face and her full cheeks, she had just taken a bite.

"Guess Mon-El must have ran to the bathroom?" Kara said, looking around and seeing no sign of the Daxamite.

"No Kara! I'm down here!" Mon-El shouted, frantically waving his arms. Without thinking, he began to run towards her, heading up onto the bridge that separated them.

Meanwhile, Kara didn't see any reason she should wait for Mon-El to get started. She gleefully pranced over to the tee, placing her ball down right where Mon-El's had been.

"Kara! Kara!" Mon-El's shouts continued to go unheard.

Kara made a big show of putting her finger in her mouth and holding it up, feeling out the wind direction. Apparently satisfied, she lowered her club and began to line up her shot, right towards Mon-El. He realized too late just what a dangerous situation he was now in.

"Wait Kara don't you'll hit me!" Mon-El shouted, but then...

THWACK

Kara swung her club, and a perfectly aimed pink golf ball was speeding towards Mon-El. Standing on the bridge, there was nowhere for him to go to avoid it. He turned away and ran, afraid to waste time by looking over his shoulder toward his pursuer. It careened into him, and at his tiny size it might as well have been a boulder. He was instantly pancaked by it, and the fact that it was slightly damp from the dew covered turf was enough to stick him to it. The ball didn't roll off of him, he rolled along with it, briefly getting an upside-down view of Kara as he hung on the back of the ball.

Kara had had no illusions of getting a a hole-in-one on the first hole. The bridge was not lined up with the hole at all, making it nearly impossible. But then, just on the other side of the bridge, the ball suddenly curved, turning to the right around the bend and towards the hole.

As Mon-El rolled along, he had no idea colliding with him had improved his giant girlfriend's shot. Hitting his tiny body had put just enough spin on the ball to turn it where Kara needed, and he occasionally caught glimpse of the quickly approaching flag that marked the location of the hole.

PLUNK

"Ha! Hole in one! Mon-El is going down!" Kara had no idea how literal that was as Mon-El lay in the hole atop the golf ball.

Dazed, Mon-El looked up to see Kara standing over the hole, smiling down at him. He still loved her smile, even as she unknowingly tormented him. He just hoped she'd see him on top of the ball now and his torment would come to an end.

What happens?

1. Kara grabs the ball without noticing him and heads to the next hole, and Mon-El is along for the ride.

2. Kara notices her tiny boyfriend in the hole, and quickly fishes him out to ask what happened.
