Something, some primal force in the back of Bill's mind told him that letting Tom actually make a wish was a incredibly bad thing and that his best friend should be stopped. So Bill did the only thing that he thought of doing, which was to forcefully smack the tiny, mysterious emerald out of Tom's hand before the depressed athlete was able to add anything onto "I wish".
"Ow! Bill, what the hell!?" Tom snarled, but Bill was otherwise distracted as the heavier of the two teens watched the gemstone go flying through the air and disappear into the bushes a little further down the sidewalk.
"Shit" Bill muttered, and pushed past Tom as he hustled to retrieve the weird artifact he'd found.
"Dude, what's up with you this morning?" Tom said, confused. The taller of the two boys rubbed his hand and shook off the rest of the fading pain before following after Bill as he made his way down the hedgerows that lined the street.
"Sorry. I've just seen too much weird shit about wishes getting twisted and turning out bad. Monkey's Paw, stuff like that" Bill apologized as he peered through the dense, decorative foliage, his eyes scanning anything that looked shiny and green. Which, given that it was mid-Spring and life was rapidly returning to the world after the cold, northern Midwest winter...Was more difficult than it seemed.
"Huh? That's just a story, Bill. Magic isn't real. You gotta take a break from all that Marvel stuff. It's messing with your brain"
"Yeah yeah, whatever. Listen, you said 'I wish', and the damn thing lit up like a Christmas light, okay? And even if I AM just imagining it, it looked expensive. If it didn't break, we can try to sell it at the mall or something. I dunno, but just help me look for it. And no wishing with it if you find it"
Tom looked at the clock on his phone, and then upwards at the darkening sky that was clearly signaling 'Rain soon' and sighed, kneeling down a few feet from his best friend and peering into the bushes.
You're glad I don't care about my attendance record anymore, Billy-boy"
After a few minutes of shoving around bush branches and leaves...
