This choice: "Fine, whatever you want, kiddo." • Go Back... "Fine, whatever you want, kiddo," Rose answered. She was happy to speed away and leave David in the schoolyard. David was also happy that she wouldn't get in his way. Downtown wasn't close, but David didn't have any trouble walking there.
Sarah's shop. Granting wishes. Hypnotism. Little girls. David tried to look for any place that could describe those. But these storefronts seemed all too familiar and nothing surprising like what he was looking for. Suddenly he took a turn and entered through a door without even looking thinking about it. Wait- why did he do that? Even so, right in front of him was Sarah.
He took just a moment to look around the shop. Counters and tables were covered with little things, made of materials that David wasn't sure about. He didn't focus on them though, and instead approached Sarah. She had her hands gently folded on top of a table covered in cloth. "Welcome David, or should I say, Catherine?" she greeted with a grin.
David was quick to notice that she was the first person to call him by name. "So you know what's been happening to me today? I just woke up an everyone thought I was a 'Cathy'. More than that..." He resisted touching his crotch. He didn't want to do that in front of a woman.
"Indeed I do." David waited for her to continue and explain, but she didn't.
"Well then? What is it?" David pressed on.
"I let you have a wish. Nothing more. Normally I give them out for a price, but when I saw you in the rain and what your life had become, I decided you deserved a freebie. Are you not satisfied? It didn't even cost you a penny."
Blood rose to David's face in anger. "No! I'm not! Everyone thinks I'm some little girl that I don't know! Even my mom!"
Sarah just shrugged. "I know what you told me yesterday but I don't know exactly what you wished for. It will change more over time too. Wishes don't happen instantly like in fairy tales. They have to come to a balance."
"I have no idea what you mean. I didn't wish for anything!"
"I just activated the wish for you. It will happen automatically since then, following whatever your subconscious thinks is best. Don't worry, it's never wrong. You'll just have to get used to it.
"I never wanted to be a girl." David said, but for some reason he couldn't put forth a hundred percent determination in saying that.
"We'll see," Sarah said, and then let more uncomfortable silence fall.
David broke it again with another question. "So, how long until it's over?"
"Until what's over?"
"Until I change back."
Sarah almost laughed. "You won't. Once the wish reaches its balance, then all will be well."
David's insides churned. She was saying that he wouldn't be himself anymore. Maybe he wouldn't be Catherine, but he still wouldn't be David either. Who even was Catherine? Who even was David? Wait, what kind of question was that. He was David. Himself. He knew himself. He was a boy, he went to high school, and he liked... he liked...
Were his memories slipping away? He tried to remember his friends' faces but only Cici came to mind. Wait- there were others. Teenagers, yes. Or were those his brother's and sister's friends? He couldn't be sure. David pulled at his hair in frustration.
"It will get easier over time," Sarah said plainly, with not an ounce of real sympathy in her voice. "You'll become something you'll like, whether you realize it or not. Just try to enjoy it, okay? Focus on what sounds good at the time and you will be on the right track."
David wanted to talk more, but what could he say? He wasn't even sure he trusted this woman's words. But still, who else could he trust? His family and elementary school thought he was Catherine. That wasn't going to work. Without saying goodbye he stormed out of Sarah's weird shop and made his way home. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
