Byleth looked up, way way up, at the immense structure she was hiding behind. She recalled that it wasn't much more than twice her height normally, but now at her new diminished size, the pillar was at least a hundred feet tall. Just simply staring up at the impressive, yet intimidating height of the stone building was enough to give the tiny teacher second thoughts about climbing it. If she fell at any point, it would be a long way down.
But if I don't try, I'll never make it to class without being seen... Byleth thought. So, although it was sure to be dangerous, she decided that ascending the pillar and running across the scaffolding was the safest route to take if she didn't want to be discovered by some other students.
Byleth braced herself, taking in a deep breath before attempting her near-impossible climb. Once she was ready, the shrunken woman grabbed hold of the lowest brick on the pillar and began to pull herself up.
She found out that the finely-crafted structure, which normally looked flat and smooth, actually had a good number of imperfections that she'd never have noticed when full-sized. Being only the size of a small rodent, however, allowed the minute mercenary to see small ridges in the rock that made for good handholds.
It was using those handholds that made the daunting climb much easier then Byleth had expected. The 3-inch tall woman was nearing the top in record time. She was now more thankful then ever that she'd spent so much time with Petra climbing trees. Never did she think that training would come in handy in quite a way like this.
It's a good thing nobody is coming by to see this. Byleth thought as she got higher and higher. She was already past 6 feet up, and now was sure that even if somebody did pass by, they wouldn't be looking up to see her. If anything, Byleth would be the one looking down at them, as if she were a giantess, and not reduced to an awfully small size.
More time passed and Byleth found herself inches away from the top of the pillar. Boards placed down for construction lined the sides. Byleth was sure she'd have an easy time scurrying along them once she made it up there. She knew the construction had been done for a few days now, and as such also knew that she had nothing to worry about when it came to any workers coming up to her level.
"Phew..." Byleth exhaled as she pulled herself up to the wooden board. The tiny teacher noticed that she wasn't nearly as tired as she thought she might have been, which was a little strange to her, considering how sick she'd been in the morning not too long ago. Still, she took a moment to do some heavy breathing. No need to hurry if it would spell disaster, she needed all the energy she could keep at her new size.
Only when stopped to let her body relax did Byleth notice how messy it was up here in the scaffolding. The boards themselves had clearly seen better days, becoming rickety and worn down, and turning a darker shade of brown. The edges of the boards chipped off, no doubt as a result of the workers using them a lot.
It all seemed like normal wear and tear to Byleth at first, until she saw the cobwebs that lined the boards to the walls and ceiling, hinting at creepy crawly guests that Byleth did not want anything to do with. Most surprisingly, a bird's nest had been perched a few feet ahead of her. Inside, three cute little eggs lay, waiting to hatch.
How could this be after only a few days of inactivity? Byleth wondered, looking unamused by the mess the monastery's workers had left behind.
Sothis..? Can you hear me? Byleth asked inside her head. No response. Byleth shook her head. I sure could use your guidance right now...
All alone and with no other choice, and not wanting to climb all the way back down, Byleth forged ahead...
